Reflect on your learning and your own research within this unit and complete all questions. Task 1 1.1 Describe below a Personal Trainer’s role in the provision of dietary advice. In your response ensure that you consider The appropriate resources for a Personal Trainer to refer to for nutritional advice Identifying clients with specific nutritional needs and the dangers of providing advice outside of your scope or practice Referral requirements and the role of medical and allied health professionals Personal trainers have limitations as to what dietary advice they can give, they are advised to guide clients to the Australian healthy eating guidelines, eat within the basic food groups. As personal trainers are not trained in giving out specific nutritional advice, this could be dangerous as we have limitation that ae not catered to people’s allergies, intolerances, cultural and religious diets. If you have a client who requires additional nutritional needs that is outside of personal trainer’s scoop, we are required to refer them on to the appropriate health professionals. This may be a Accredited Practising Dietitian, Accredited Sports Dietitian, or General Practitioner. 1.2 Provide below a description of the purpose of the Australian Dietary Guidelines and the 5 Food Groups and how these can be used by Personal Trainers and clients. The objective of the Australian dietary guidelines is to provide guidance to healthy eating. The Australian dietary guidelines encourage healthy eating and gives a guide on the amount of food from each food group that we should aim to consume and who to reduce the risk of diet- relation health conditions. The 5 food groups are Vegetables/ legumes, Fruit, Grain (cereal) foods, Lean meats and Milk Page | 1

Personal trainers can assist clients with a healthy eating guide using this format whilst staining within there scope and are encouraged to refer clients to approiate allied health proffesionals when required. 1.3 List below at least one limitation of the use of the Australian Dietary Guidelines by the public or by health professionals. One limitation with using the Australian Dietary guideline is that is just a guideline of what we are recommended to consume, it doesn’t take into account, allergies, religious and cultural diets, health conditions i.e. Diabetes, low iron, pregnancy illnesses. The guide also does not consider peoples different energy needs based on their levels of activity and their height. It is simply a GUIDE 1.4 Describe below some organisational policies in regards to legal and ethical limitations and client confidentiality. In your response detail how you can follow these procedures. Our oraganisational polices around legal and ethical limiations and confidentiality require us to respect clients privacy and rights, The legal polices don’t alow us to share other clients information and have there records locked and saved away. Our ethical limiations don’t allow anti discrimination against individuals regardless of race genfer or culture. We are encourage to treat all clients with thre same respect. 1.5 A client has asked you how to read and interpret food labels. She has provided you with the label of a muesli bar that she eats most days. For milk, yogurt and icecream, choose less than 2g per 100g. For cheese, choose less than 15g per 100g Fibre: 11.5G generally 3g or more per serve Sodium: 150mg. Food with less than 400mg per 100g are good, and less than 120mg per 100g is best 1.6 Describe below the benefits of combining healthy eating and moderate physical activity. Together, a healthful diet and regular physical activity can help people: Achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Reduce the risk of disease Task Two 2.1 As a Personal Trainer you are required to refer clients who are seeking advice that is outside of your scope of practice to the relevant allied or medical professional.
