4.06 Using Nutrition Applications (50 Points)
Part 1: Nutrition App Evaluation (35 points)
In the lesson, you learned about different types of nutrition apps and how they can be
beneficial to behavior change. For this activity, you should choose a diet or nutrition app to
evaluate. You may use one of the apps listed in the lesson or you can another diet or
nutrition app of your choice.
A couple of notes as you choose an diet or nutrition app to evaluate:
●
Plan to use the app for at least one day. You should input your food intake into the
account for at least one day.
o
If you do not have access to a smartphone, use the web version of the app.
o
If you cannot make an account or if you do not have access to device for a
day, talk to your teacher and/or facilitator.
●
Choose an app that offers most of its basic services for free. You are
not
expected to
pay for an app for this assignment.
●
The app should offer some type of food/nutrition tracking for this assignment in order
to answer the questions.
1.
What is the name of the app?
(2 points)
MyPlate App
2.
Who created the app? Can you tell if the people at the company are credentialed nutrition
professionals?
(3 points)
The USDA Food and Nutrition Service is the organization that
created and developed this app.
3.
What are the main features of the program? What does it do (5 points)?
(5 points)
Some
of its main features are choosing a goal you would like, setting real time progress in your
diet, and earning badges to celebrate your success when completing curtain tasks in the
app.
4.
Are there any drawbacks to the program? You can write about your own experience
and/or look at the reviews for the app.
(5 points)
Some of it’s drawbacks are that it
doesn’t offer any useful features or features that align with the person since most of it’s
features are basic and don’t help people get an accurate daily diet for people seeking
answers where sometimes the app won’t function at all.
5.
When tracking your food intake, were there any foods you could not find?
(5 points)
Some of the food intake when searching for foods I couldn’t find personally is because
oils and fats aren’t listed in the categories in the app.

6.
What are its competitors? Why is this technology a better choice than its competitors?
(5
points)
There aren’t many competitors in the market, but some I found to be better and
have better reviews: “Food Buying Guide for CNP” and “Calories Counter:
MyNetDiary,” which have better and more useful features because the app works better
or is more efficient and easy to use.
7.
If there is a paid version, how much does it cost?
(5 points)
There is one known as
“Diabetes and Diet Tracker,” and it costs about $9.99 to get the app.
8.
Would you recommend this tool to a friend? Why or why not?
(5 points)
I wouldn’t
recommend a friend get the MyPlate app since most of its features are useless and don’t
benefit him when it comes to choosing a diet or selecting foods that could help him keep
a healthy diet, and using the diagram is much better for him than wasting time on the
app.
Part 2: Nutrition App Reflection (15 points)
After completing the lesson and the questions in part 1 of this assignment, discuss the
benefits and drawbacks to a diet or nutrition app. Your response should be written in 3-4
complete sentences.
Write your answer below in 3-4 complete sentences:
Some benefits when it comes to a diet or nutrition app are that it offers you credible knowledge
and information about food groups or types by giving you options on what types of diets are
best for you, and it's free for everyone in the public to go on. Some drawbacks when it comes
to diet and nutrition apps are that sometimes the app does not function properly, with many
features that are useless and not beneficial when it comes to looking for something that you're
looking for. Some apps do not have a full list of food options that you were trying to look up,
and some apps might encourage the individual to eat less often. In my opinion, I really do see
the benefits and drawbacks when it comes to diet and nutrition apps, but there are some who
do enjoy using these apps to maintain a healthy diet. It is completely optional if you would like
to try it out, as for me, I personally don’t recommend using these apps for your overall diet.
