Abstract:
What is this article about? (one sentence):
The article seeks to understand the sustainability of health services for refugees who have returned to their country in west Nile districts of Arua, Adjumani and Moyo.
What is the research question?
How sustainable are humanitarian assistance programmes like health services in developing countries?
What is the working hypothesis or thesis?
It is important to measure sustainability of humanitarian health services in developing countries in order to inform development of quality services especially in a refugee setup.
Why do you think this article is relevant to your studies or work?
The article helps me understand how to combine statistical skills in data collection, analysis and conclusion an aspect that I will significantly apply when writing my projects and dissertations in future studies. Secondly, I project to have a career in humanitarian programmes back in India and this helps me understand the importance of creating sustainable humanitarian programmes. 6.
List some key terms that the professionals are using: sustainability, funding, humanitarian
assistance programmes, refugee repatriation
7.
Introduction:
What is the context or background to this article?
The article focuses on the sustainability of health associated with hosting refugees in different camps, including those in West Nile, Uganda, districts. Besides, the vital objective was understanding refugees' health challenges and significant protection from organizations like UNHCR.
Is this research unique? Why or why not?
The research is unique and entails detailed research that gives insight into the significance of sustainable health among refugees in their camps. As a person interested in humanitarian programs, this study is essential and unique in understanding treating people fairly in places like refugee camps. The article helps establish and enhance effective humanitarian programs that value the needs of vulnerable people like refugees.
Does this tell you anything you did not know before?
Despite the article giving ideas concerning non-governmental organizations like UNHCR and refugees, it discusses humanitarian programs and the need for sustainable health initiatives and
funding to protect refugees, which I had limited knowledge of.
8.
Discussion/conclusion:
What does the study mean and why is it important?
The study explores or gives insight into the sustainability of health services in refugee-hosting districts, particularly in Uganda. Besides, the study is important because it gives information on the challenges refugees face and how to manage them using funding and strengthening health care services.
What are the weaknesses in the authors’ argument?
The authors' argument and research focused on only three districts in Uganda, particularly in West Nile, which limits the generalization of the study outcomes to other refugee camps globally or even in Uganda. Using a qualitative approach to analyze and understand health services in the refugee hosting districts also limits the attainment of comprehensive knowledge
regarding the sustainability of health services offered to refugees in three hosting districts.
Is the conclusion valid? Why or why not?
The conclusion is valid as it depicts how the interventions like integrating health services into local health systems enhance the sustainability of humanitarian health services, which answers the research question and confirms the study hypothesis.
Do you agree with the authors’ conclusions? Why or why not?
I agree with the authors' conclusions on integrating health service programs into local health systems to improve sustainability. The consideration of the local health system will help in primary health and effective management of issues experienced by refugees using common techniques they understand.
9.
Results/Analysis.
What did the researchers learn?
The research learned that combining health service and community service or local health systems improves the sustainability of health services. They also learned that inadequate funding and limited experienced healthcare practitioners contribute to refugees' challenges.
If there are tables or illustrations, what do they tell you?
The authors used to table to illustrate the trends in data such as the total number of health facilities, those operating, closed, and used by refugees. Besides, these tables offer a clear insight into the state of health care in Uganda's three districts hosting refugees.
Does the author use statistics to show their results? How?
By focusing on qualitative analysis, the authors minimized using statistics to analyze and understand the sustainability of health services in three regions with refugees. Only one table appears in the results section to illustrate the data on health facilities in the three districts.
Does the author present the results in a factual and unbiased way? Why do you think so?
The authors result in a factual and unbiased way after comprehensive qualitative research that entailed detailed interviews with distinct individuals in health care systems. All the presented findings based on information gained from interviewed participants and results were effectively discussed to give a credible understanding of the topic.
10.

The authors used purposive sampling strategy where interviews were conducted from two distinct and wide-ranging categories of respondents. The first category comprised of administrators and managers while the second category comprised of technical stuffs. The sample sizes for the two categories were 11 and 17 respondents respectively. The interview questions were open ended and they were audio recorded. In order to have a more localized outlook of health service delivery in refugee areas, each district; Adjumani, Moyo and Arua; was treated independently. The research interviews were undertaken by research assistants who were adequately trained on data collection techniques and ethics.
Who participated in the research?

The article by Komakech et al. (2023) provides an effective analysis and insight into the significance of sustainability of health services in three of Uganda’s refugee-hosting districts in West Nile. The authors considered a credible research question and hypothesis, which enhanced the understanding of health challenges faced by refugees in three districts (Arua, Adjumani, and Moyo). Besides, the authors concentrated on a qualitative approach involving in-depth interviews with almost 28 participants (11 administrators/managers and 17 technical staff). The interview involved open-ended questions that were vital recorded. The results reveal that integrating health services with local health systems and community participation are credible in handling the refugees’ health challenges. The findings also depict less funding and the limited number of experienced healthcare professionals as major causes of health challenges faced by refugees in the
three districts. As such, increasing funding and the number of skilled healthcare professionals solve the health concerns experienced by refugees. However, the study focuses on only three districts in Uganda, which limits its application in understanding and solving health issues faced by refugees in other districts globally. Therefore, this is an effective study that gives insight into humanitarian programs, health issues faced by refugees, and how to manage them.
