Throughout my practicum at a public health organization, I have seen instances of
professionalism that align with the qualities covered in the workplace professionalism video,
both positive and negative. I can connect these events and the instances in the film, even if I do
not name names.
First off, I have seen instances of the agency exhibiting positive professionalism. One
noteworthy instance is the senior public health official's dedication to honesty and integrity in
public relations communications. Even when the information was complex or contentious, this
person constantly gave factual information concerning health-related matters. This is consistent
with the video's emphasis on the value of honesty.
The responsibility and accountability shown by a group of researchers is another
excellent example. They took responsibility for their work, communicated clearly within the
team, and regularly reached project deadlines. This type of accountability is essential in the
context of public health, where promptness and accuracy have a direct bearing on community
well-being.
Conversely, there have been cases of dubious conduct within the organization. One
unfavorable instance is when there is a communication breakdown about specific project results.
Some information was withheld from the public to provide a more favorable picture. The values
of honesty and integrity that are covered in the film are compromised by this action.
Another unfavorable example concerns a team member who neglected to accept
accountability for a data analysis error that resulted in incorrect report conclusions. In this
instance, the absence of accountability affected the research's credibility and might have misled
decision-makers.

Thinking back on my own experiences, I can picture an instance where a coworker
circulated rumors and gossiped about a fellow employee. The individual's reputation was harmed
by this action, which also made the workplace unfriendly. The consequences encompassed
strained relationships among team members, a drop in morale, and a reduction in overall
productivity (Lee & Zarowsky, 2015).
On a separate occasion, I witnessed a supervisor appropriating the accomplishments of a
subordinate during a formal presentation to higher-level executives. The absence of
acknowledgment not only elicited feelings of discouragement in the employee but also posed
challenges for the organization in cultivating an environment characterized by mutual regard and
collaboration.
These actions resulted in significant repercussions. The dissemination of false material
undermined public confidence in the organization, which might affect upcoming public health
campaigns. Ignoring errors in the data analysis could have resulted in poorly thought-out policy
choices. Credit-stealing and gossiping fostered a toxic work environment that harmed team
cohesiveness and employee well-being.
It takes well-defined policies and processes to stop or minimize such questionable
behavior. The organization must first establish a robust code of ethics. This code should
explicitly outline expectations for accountability, responsibility, honesty, and integrity (Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017). Staff members may feel more held to these standards
if regular workplace professionalism training sessions are conducted, drawing from the concepts
presented in the movie.
Furthermore, open communication procedures must be established, stressing the value of
integrity even under trying circumstances (Thomas et al., 2002). Fostering a culture that supports

owning up to mistakes and making amends is a good idea. Establishing a mechanism for
reporting and addressing ethical issues without worrying about reprisals can help.
Training in interpersonal communication and conflict resolution can be beneficial in
addressing problems such as credit stealing and gossip. It is imperative to ensure that workers are
well-informed about the adverse ramifications of these activities and are granted the necessary
empowerment to amicably address any conflicts that may arise (YouTube, 2021). Credit stealing
can also be deterred by recognition and incentive programs that emphasize and honor individual
efforts and teamwork.
In conclusion, professionalism in the workplace—exemplified by traits like
accountability, integrity, honesty, and responsibility—is critical in public health. Based on
observations made within the practicum agency and personal experiences, it is clear that positive
professionalism plays a role in promoting public health results and a safe workplace. On the
other hand, dubious actions might have serious consequences, emphasizing the necessity of
precise rules and procedures to stop and lessen them.
