Please complete the following steps for your discussion post and response. This week we are discussing Microbiology, Immunology, and Blood Bank. Please answer all the following questions on what you will do to make sure you are a successful medical assistant. As a medical assistant, explain the importance of knowing the types different types of germs that can make a human ill? Explain one item that you learned this week that you had no prior knowledge on and what you feel was the most important about this item What have you learned from the P.R.I.C.E Model of Success that you feel will be important when assisting or educating your patients with Microbiology, Immunology, and Blood Bank in your office and explain why? In your opinion, what is the most important takeaway that was presented in this unit’s material and how will it relate to your career as a medical assistant? Please pose a question to your classmates that you feel will enhance this unit’s learning. Please review post and response expectations. Please review the rubric to ensure that your response meets criteria. Estimated time to complete: 2 hours As a medical assistant, it is important to understand the different types of germs and the way that they can be spread. Not all germs are bad as some germs help us to stay healthy, but many germs can make one sick and lead to an infectious disease that is caused by germs. The main germs that may cause one to contract or spread are bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa. We must keep all protected from the ability to contract an illness from a patient who may be ill. So, make sure we wash our hands, wear masks, and keep all areas clean from further contamination. We must coach our patients on things they may do to further prevent the spread of germs and provide them with the necessary tools and treatment to do so. In Unit 7 the CLIA waved guidelines and microbiology testing is an area that is new to me and as being a patient something that I was never aware of. As always, all the definitions in the Herzing University P.R.I.C.E. model apply to being a medical assistant and it is important when treating a patient and collecting samples or specimens that we do so in a professional manner, making sure that the patient is cared for comfortably, and all times treat them with integrity and in an ethical manner. In this unit, I believe that it is most important that we are taking specimens in any form while being aware of what we are doing and that we provide the lab with an accurate collection so that it does not result in any errors or is returned, and we must inconvenience the patient again. Question for peers – What is the difference between a Gram Stain and an Acid-fast stain?
