September Bonds. HS 339 assignment 3.1. Call Rogers created person centered therapy, which was a non-directive empathic approach that helps empower and motivate the client in the therapeutic process. Person centered therapy is a direct result of Rogers theory that every person is capable of realizing their own potential. Carl Rogers believed that people if guided correctly could basically find the strength within themselves to see their true potential. Which by doing that the individual would be able to see what they needed to work on and how they were going to change. The human service field and psychotherapy field have been greatly impacted by person centered therapy.
Empathy is something very important to have when it comes to the helping profession. Having empathy will help the counselor to better be able to understand an individuals thought process and feelings. Having empathy can help the counselor be able to convey to the client what
the counselor is hearing and understanding from the client correctly. It helps the counselor show the client that they understand what they are feeling and without judgment as well. By having and showing empathy the counselor is helping the client open up and be more adaptable to change. Empathy allows the counselor to help the client become more aware of their own thoughts and feelings and help the client see and experience things from a different perspective.
Having unconditional positive regard in the helping process is very important because it helps
the client to feel more comfortable which in turn will help the client be more open and honest when working with a counselor. It helps show the client that the counselor is present and truly there for them in whatever way they may need the counselor to be. It will help build trust and connection on the client/helper relationship. Every person in the world craves positive regard in relationships. People need to feel loved and accepted and respected, and by showing the client these things it will show the client they can trust the counselor and fully confide in them. It helps the client trust the counselor enough to take suggestions and also accept things the counselor is
