Upon arriving in CT, my manager took me under his wing
and showed me the ropes to succeed. To become a
certified Medical Assistant again in CT, I had to travel to
Stamford for a month to prepare for my certification exam.
I completed the courses and took the two-hour test,
passing and becoming a certified medical assistant in CT.
I decided to accept a position in TN. Within two
weeks, I packed up my home, said goodbye to my
family, friends, and everything I had ever known, and
set out on my new adventure to TN.
I arrived at the clinic, and it was not what I expected
or was told. I was given a large book and without any
training. I was expected to do my job. My co-workers
could have been more helpful, mean, and
intimidating. I quickly learned that I was on my own
and had to find a way to succeed and grow in my
position.
THE ORDEAL/THE INNERMOST CAVE
CROSSING THE THRESHOLD
TESTS, ALLIES, AND ENEMIES
CALL TO ADVENTURE
I live in my hometown of Austin, Texas, and have worked as
a medical assistant for five years. I was allowed to move to
Oakdale, Minnesota, to pursue a new career at a better and
bigger medical office.
WISE HELPERS/MENTORS
I was struggling with my presented adventure. I spoke
with my father, who reminded me that we only live
once. He guided me in my decision by reminding me
that I had climbed the job ladder and had outgrown my
city. Moving to a different town would present more
opportunities, money, and a chance to meet new
people.
THE RELUCTANT HERO
Accepting this opportunity meant leaving everything
behind, including friends, family, and everything I had
ever known. I was moving to a strange place, not
knowing anyone or whether I would be successful.
What if I hated it and had uprooted my entire life to
fail?

HERO’S JOURNEY
SEIZING THE SWORD
Over time, I found my way and became comfortable in
my new job setting and meeting new people. Being
promised growth, opportunity, and continuing
education that was not delivered, I gained much
respect from my co-workers, experience, and a
better knowledge of Medical Settings.
THE RESURRECTION
I survived three years at the clinic, gained experience
and knowledge, and knew I would never get awarded
for my job, and there was no opportunity or room for
growth. I needed to finish my college degree. I
enrolled at Rasmussen College and began my search
for a new job at a different clinic or hospital.

HAVING SUCCEEDED IN MY POSITION, I STILL NEEDED MORE. I
QUICKLY REALIZED THAT THERE NEEDED TO BE MORE ROOM FOR
GROWTH AND OPPORTUNITY. THE PROMISE OF CONTINUING MY
EDUCATION WAS SOON OBSOLETE. I HAD GAINED RESPECT FROM
MY CO-WORKERS, BUT THAT RESPECT SOON TURNED TO
JEALOUSY AND COMPETITION. I WANTED TO RETURN TO THE
COMPANY SIDE AND PICK UP MY COLLEGE EDUCATION, SO I
STOPPED MOVING TO TN.

THE RETURN
COLLEGE IS COMING TO AN END. I INTERVIEWED FOR A
HIGHER POSITION AS A MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ON
THE COMPANY SIDE IN TN AND GOT THE JOB. I WOULD BE
MAKING TRIPLE THE MONEY I WAS EARNING IN CT, AND
WITH THE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE GAINED AT
THE CLINIC THAT BROUGHT ME TO TN, I AM WHERE I AM
TODAY.
