Personal Leadership Reflection
The foundation of an effective leadership begins at an individual level. Mostly, good
leadership is attributed to the traits that an individual demonstrates. Therefore, self-assessment
and reflection is significant in understanding how influential or biased one might be as a leader.
Also, in the healthcare settings and most of other organizations where people work in teams and
the success of collective goals is determined by individual action it is important for people to
assess their leadership qualities to ensure that they understand how they are contributing and
areas that they can improve on to become an asset to their teams. The essay will extensively
present a self-reflection of leadership qualities including strengths and weaknesses and highlight
a personal development that will guide my competency development over a certain period of
time.
Part 1: Leadership Self-Reflection
ACHE Leadership Domains
The leadership domains assessed by the ACHE assessment tool include; Communication
and Relationship Management, Leadership, Professionalism, Knowledge of the healthcare
environment and Business Skills and Knowledge. The Communication and Relationship
Management domain entails the ability to manage relationships, facilitation and negotiation
capacity and communication skills. It assess the level leaders to communicate with all the
stakeholders, maintain healthy relationships, and foster positive interactions (Sillerud, &
Winkler, 2020). In this domain, I have mastered the relationship management and
communication skills as I always try to engage my work team members in professional
conversations that lead us to maintaining healthy and beneficial interpersonal relationships at
3
work and in social settings. However, I struggle with negotiation skills especially while trying to
get the physicians to take up more tasks and reduce the workload.
The leadership domain on the other hand entails the ability to demonstrate leadership
skills and behavior, manage change, community the vision of the organization to the team, and
foster organization culture and climate. I’m well equipped in all the leadership aspects except the
ability to manage frequent change. The other domain, professionalism involves the ability to
demonstrate adherence to ethical and professional standards while in professional operations.
The domain emphasizes on demonstrating accountability the patient, community, and dedication
to lifetime learning and improvements (Grigoropoulos, 2020). In relation to the professionalism
domain, my strength involves being consistent in demonstrating strong ethical behavior and
integrity in decision-making while my biggest weakness having challenges in managing stress
which undermines my ability to remain professional.
In addition, ACHE tools assesses leader’s knowledge of the healthcare environment. The
assessment here captures the physician’s ability to understand the community, the patient’s
perspective, healthcare systems and organizations, and personnel (Abdel Aziz, et al., 2020). I
have a deep understanding of the healthcare regulations landscape and its impact on healthcare
professional conduct. However, I have limited exposure to the currently emerging healthcare
technologies which challenges my understanding of the changes in healthcare systems hence
leading to my limited knowledge of the healthcare environment. The business skills and
knowledge involves a variety of aspects which connects the business aspect to healthcare. The
domain basically entails demonstrating the capacity to incorporate business principles in
healthcare environment operations. I’m well equipped in financial principles and can effectively

align my understanding of in my daily practice. However, I struggle with strategic planning
which is an integral part in providing safe and quality care.
Strategies to Develop the Identified Strengths and Weaknesses
To address my weakness in negotiation and conflict skills, my main strategy is to sign up
for conflict management training programs. Also, I can work on actively listening and
demonstrating empathy while communicating with my team members. Through the training, I
will attain knowledge on effective negotiation skills that will help me understand how to
structure my communication while trying to persuade the team members to take up more tasks.
Active listening and empathy will also be essential in understanding other people’s needs and
concerns that can help me re-strategize my communication approach and achieve outmost
results. To advance on my communication skills I will work on attending more workshops and
participating in publics speaking within the organization and when I need to represent the
organization.
I can develop the ability to manage frequent change by staying updated on the industry’s
trends and shifts. One major way to stay on top of the trends is frequently collecting data and
attending workshops related to the industry. Also, I can develop on my ability to manage change
by adopting a growth mindset where I’m open to adjusting my leadership approaches depending
on the presented circumstances. To address my weakness in managing stress under the
professionalism domain, I can use work supportive network as my main strategy. Through a
network of team members willing to support each other through all the challenging
circumstances, I can be less overwhelmed in stressful moments hence demonstrating healthy
stress management process. Also, I can use stress-regulation exercises such as mindfulness to be
aware of my emotions and act accordingly. To advance on my strength to practice ethically and
5
professionally, I can attend seminars to familiarize myself with any new ethical standards
guiding the industry.
To develop my familiarity with emerging technologies that impact my knowledge of the
industry I can work with technology experts and shadow team members that are more
experienced in integrating new technologies in the practice. To develop on my regulatory
knowledge, I can share my knowledge and understanding with other team members through
presentations. Lastly, to improve on strategic planning, I can devise a strategy that involves
taking strategic management courses and engaging in discussions on strategic planning within
the organization.
Qualities Needed by Leaders
Some of the top qualities that a leader is required to have include; effective
communication, integrity, empathy, adaptability, and strategic thinking. Effective communication
is the most significant skills in leadership as it enables collaboration to achieving collective goals
(Grigoropoulos, 2020). Organizations work in different teams which are required to work at an
individual level towards the common goal. Therefore, communication is essential for the leader
to communicate the shared vision and the strategic ways to achieve it harmoniously without
conflict efforts. Also, effective leadership is characterized by transparency which can only be
achieved when the leader acts with integrity and leads as an example on how the team should
adhere to the core regulatory and ethical basis of the industry. This leadership quality ensures
that leaders can demonstrate accountability which aligns with the professionalism domain. In
addition, leaders are required to be critical thinkers and demonstrate high level ability to adapt to
frequently changing circumstances. In the contemporary society, operations in various industries
are frequently changing following the increased integration of technological resources.
6
Therefore, to lead well, leaders need to stay on top business trends that impact their industries to
ensure that their organizations offer services that aligns with customer’s changing preferences
and that leaders can guide their teams into the right direction.
Analyze the Qualities of a Leader You Have and the Ones You Need To Develop
Some of the leadership qualities that I demonstrate include; communication skills, high
emotional intelligence, and the ability to confidently make timely decisions. I demonstrate
effective verbal communication while interacting with my team or delegating tasks to various
members.
I communicate clearly and able to structure my communication approach to suit my
audience hence passing on the message as intended something that makes collaboration easier in
my work environment. However, I need to develop on my active listening skills that has led to
me to struggling with understanding the needs of other people and handling conflict resolution
well.
Also, I demonstrate a good understanding of my team member’s emotions and needs, a
perspective that allows me to connect with them and delegate tasks efficiently. My emotional
intelligence capacity improves the level of trust between me and my team members as they feel
understood, valued, and part of the team. However, I need to develop on my stress management
skills which tempers on my ability to maintain a positive outlook and composure. The team has
expectation of the leader to step up especially in challenging circumstances. However, my
emotional regulation inability my undermine this role and make the team lose confidence in my
leadership. Therefore, I intended to develop on my emotions regulation to positively impact my
team.

Moreover, I have valuable decision-making skills which enhances collaboration within
my team members and draws confidence in my actions. I frequently evaluate various business
outcomes which allows me to make the right decision in a timely manner when required.
However, I need to develop my inclusive-decision making skills. I demonstrate efficiency while
making decisions alone but frequently struggle with including my team members in important
decisions that directed impact them which affects the overall quality of the decisions made.

organization. Leaders should demonstrate a certain level of abilities to be able to lead people to
the right direction and lead to the growth of organizations and operational efficiency. However,

for one to be a remarkable leader, they need to perform a leadership self-reflection that enables
them to understand their individual’s levels and areas that they need to improve on to be better

healthcare environment and Business Skills and Knowledge. These domains help evaluate the
abilities that one possess and how they can make them effective leaders. Some of the areas that I
struggle with include; stress management, negotiation skills, and emotional regulations. I can
address these shortcomings through attending training programs, workshops, and working
closely with other management members to learn from their expertise. The top qualities that
leaders are expected to demonstrated include; effective communication, integrity, empathy,
adaptability, and strategic thinking. Personally, the top leadership qualities that I demonstrate
include; communication skills, high emotional intelligence, and the ability to confidently make
timely decisions the ones that I struggle with active listening skills, inclusive-decision making
skills, and emotional regulation. The top goals I plan on developing include; strategic thinking,
communication skills, and conflict resolution skills.
