The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) were a set of eight international development
goals established following the Millennium Summit of the United Nations in 2000. They were
aimed at addressing various global challenges by the target year 2015. However, in 2015, the
MDGs were succeeded by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which expanded and
built upon the progress made while addressing the limitations of the MDGs. Since you asked for
suggestions to improve the MDGs as of this year (2023), I'll provide you with some
recommendations based on the evolution from MDGs to SDGs:
Goal 1: Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger - This goal could be updated to emphasize not
just the reduction but the complete elimination of extreme poverty and hunger. Additionally, it
could include a focus on income inequality to ensure that the benefits of economic growth are
more equitably distributed (World Bank, 2018).
Goal 2: Achieve Universal Primary Education - This goal could be broadened to encompass
quality education at all levels, from primary to tertiary education. It should also incorporate
lifelong learning opportunities to address changing skill requirements in the modern world
(UNESCO, 2020).
Goal 3: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women - This goal remains relevant but could
be expanded to address intersectional issues, such as the unique challenges faced by women of
different backgrounds (e.g., racial, ethnic, or socio-economic disparities) (UN Women, 2021).
Goal 4: Reduce Child Mortality - This goal should continue but could be refined to focus on
maternal and child health as a whole, including access to healthcare during pregnancy and
childbirth (WHO, 2019).
Goal 5: Improve Maternal Health - Similar to goal 4, this goal could be broadened to address
overall women's health and well-being, including reproductive rights and access to healthcare
beyond just maternal health (UNFPA, 2020).
Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria, and Other Diseases - This goal should be updated to
include a broader range of health issues, including emerging infectious diseases (as seen with the
COVID-19 pandemic) and non-communicable diseases (UNAIDS, 2022).
Goal 7: Ensure Environmental Sustainability - This goal could be strengthened to include more
specific targets related to climate change mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable
resource management (UNEP, 2021).
Goal 8: Develop a Global Partnership for Development - This goal should continue but could be
updated to emphasize fair trade, technology transfer, and cooperation in addressing global
challenges (United Nations, 2015).
Conclusion
While the original MDGs made significant progress, they were limited in scope and time frame.
The SDGs, which were adopted in 2015 and are currently in effect, address a broader set of
global challenges and provide a more comprehensive and integrated framework for sustainable
development. Therefore, it would be advisable to focus on implementing and achieving the
SDGs rather than attempting to revise the older MDGs at this point in time.
