Discuss the ethical guidelines that would need to be implemented when conducting translational research. What are the ethical and legal considerations related to translating research into practice? Discuss what steps you would take as a member of a translational research team in order to establish ethical guidelines for conducting translational research. For any translational research, strict adherence to ethical guidelines should be followed, particularly as it relates to the T phases where research is being translated at the animal, individual human, and population levels. The four basic principles of healthcare ethics should be considered, including autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice (Varkey, 2020). Ethical guidelines such as informed consent, privacy and confidentiality, transparency, animal bioethics, conflicts of interest, social injustice, and risk analysis must be ensured during translational research (Varkey, 2020). It is equally as important to have a solid comprehension of legislation that governs research ethics in healthcare including the Belmont Report and the Common Rule (OHRP, 2022) in the United States, and internationally, the Nuremberg Code (Moreno et al., 2017) and the Declaration of Helsinki (WMA, 2022). One should also know where to seek out approval from institutional review boards and ethics committees. Financial interests may also pose legal concerns or discredit the research. As a member of a translational research team, establishing that ethical guidelines for the study were followed, I would first seek out institutional review board approval and submit to a research ethics committee. I would work to secure patient privacy and follow HIPPA regulations. I would ensure full transparency with all stakeholders and ensure all participants were aware of the risk analysis results. I would establish a team to continuously review for any patient safety concerns. Further, I would uphold personal integrity and ensure other members of the research team also maintained their integrity, as well as the integrity of the study. References
