Geology 1: General Geology (Section 80) Department of Geology San José State University Instructor: Matthew Leigh Office Location: Duncan Hall 301 Email: matthew.leigh@sjsu.edu Office Hours: Monday, 1:30-2:30 pm or by appointment Prerequisites: None Class Time: Monday, Wednesday 10:30 – 11:45pm Instruction Modality/Classroom: Lecture: Online; Lab: In Person, Duncan Hall 311 GE Area Lecture: B1; Lab: B3 Course Description Examination of geologic processes and materials, including volcanoes, earthquakes, rock formation, oceans, streams, and plate tectonics and their importance to society. Area B1/B3 Learning Objectives (GELOs) The GE learning objectives for this course are met through a variety of assignments in the lecture and laboratory components of the course. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Demonstrate knowledge of scientific theories, concepts, and data used in the physical and life sciences. 2. Apply scientific principles and communicate in ways appropriate to the discipline about the process and results of scientific discovery. 3. Access, critically evaluate, and represent scientific information in various forms and draw appropriate conclusions. 4. Use methods derived from current scientific inquiry to form evidence-based opinions about science-related matters of personal, public, and ethical concern. Diversity Statement As a scientist, teacher, and human being, I value listening to and learning from diverse perspectives. In Geology 1, we benefit, and learn, from the inclusion and interaction with individuals from all backgrounds. I am always looking for ways to create a more inclusive class 1
and bring diverse perspectives to the topics we cover in this class. I strive to recognize people and groups who, because of long-standing biases, deserve greater respect and recognition for their work/knowledge/contributions to Geology as a science and as a discipline of practice. I will also do my best to make you welcome and included, regardless of your gender, gender identity, ethnicity, race, age, religion, spiritual belief, sexual orientation, geographic origin, socioeconomic background, veteran status, and varied abilities. If at any point you do not feel included in the learning, please do not hesitate to contact me. Textbook Marshak, Stephen, 2019, Essentials of Geology , W.W. Norton & Co: New York, 7th ed. A link to the book can be found in the “Other Course Materials” module in Canvas. Grading A total of 1000 points are used to determine your course grade. The grade is determined based on the points breakdown below: Minimum grade is 40% on any assignment. Students must receive a C- (70%) as a CSU graduation requirement. Exams 300 pts Quizzes 125 pts Homework Assignments 100 pts In-Class Assignments 100 pts Writing Assignments 100 pts Lab 250 pts Final letter grades will be assigned according to the following percentages that are calculated from your total points out of 1000. 98-100%: A+ 93-97%: A 90-92%: A- 87-89%: B+ 83-86%: B 80-82%: B- 77-79%: C+ 73-76%: C 70-72%: C- 67-69%: D+ 63-66%: D 60-62%: D- <60%: F Exams (300 pts.) There will be a total of three exams in this class (each worth 100 points), two in-class midterms and a final. Each exam will contain a combination of multiple choice and true/false and short answers (e.g. drawing and explaining key diagrams). More details will be provided a week before the exam. Exam questions will focus on information 2
discussed in lecture, but material from the assigned and relevant book chapters are also fair game. A study guide will be provided and should be used to supplement your independent studying. Quizzes (125 pts.) A total of 10 quizzes, each worth 25 pts., will be administered throughout the semester. The majority of these will be completed on Canvas. Quizzes will contain questions focusing on information from lectures and readings and are designed to encourage you to review the material we cover in class and remain up to date on all readings. These are open note quizzes. Starting with week 3, the quizzes will be due at 11:59 pm on every Wednesday except on days when an exam is given. If you miss an online quiz, you will not be able to make it up. Please make sure you complete the quiz by the due date and time . Homework Assignments (125 pts.) Several homework assignments will be completed over the course of the semester and will be designed to enhance understanding of course material and to address some of the Area B1 learning objectives. We will discuss each homework assignment in class at the appropriate time. In-Class Work (100 pts.) SmartWorks Activities and Guided Learnings will comprise this section of the class. Like the quizzes, these are designed to enhance understanding of course content. These activities happen every Monday and Wednesday unless there is an exam. You must be in class on the day of the in-class assignments to complete them; makeups will not be given, and late assignments will not be accepted. Writing Assignments (100 pts.) A series of small writing assignments (13 points) leading to a 1500 word term paper (87 points) is required in this class. It will contain outside research from literature outside of the textbook. The topic of the paper and formatting details will be discussed later. The paper will be turned in on Canvas. Lab (250 pts.) Concurrent enrollment in a section of the geology 1 lab is required for this course. Details about the lab will be provided by your TA on the first day that your lab meets. Your lab grade will be combined with your grade on assignments for the lecture portion of the course and will count for 25% of your final grade (250 pts.). Please make sure you attend labs and communicate with your lab TA. It is generally not possible to pass this class without passing the lab. Students must receive a C- (70%) as a CSU graduation requirement. Course requirements and expectations Canvas We will be using Canvas, a learning management system, throughout the semester. You 3

will need your SJSU student ID number and SJSU ONE account password to access the Canvas page. Course materials such as the syllabus and schedule, PowerPoint lectures, handouts, notes, assignments, etc. can be found at the Canvas course link listed on p. 1, or through the Spartan App Portal ( http://one.sjsu.edu ). You are responsible for regularly checking messages through MySJSU or Canvas to learn of any updates. For help with Canvas see: https://www.sjsu.edu/ecampus/software-tools/teaching- tools/canvas/student-resources/index.php. Zoom Protocol I will open the meeting at 30 min after the start of class. This time will be used to do the activity for that day. You are expected to arrive to class each day on time and be prepared to listen, interact, and participate in discussions/activities. Think of these meetings as a tutoring session. While I will talk about class business first off, the rest of class will be a question-and-answer period. This means that it is essential for you to keep up on readings, to take notes, and to review them regularly. Late work Late assignments will receive a 5% drop in grade for each day the assignment is late. No assignment will be accepted more than one week past the due date. It is in your best interest to attend each class and participate in the daily discussions/exercises. All assignments are posted on the Canvas page on or before the day they are assigned. Make-up exams will only be given in extraordinary circumstances, and generally only if I am notified at least 24 hours in advance. Contact me if you have any questions about this. Extra Credit Other than several extra credit questions that may be on each of the exams, no extra credit will be given in this course. Academic Integrity You are responsible for knowing the University Policy on Academic Integrity which can be found at the link listed below.
