ERTH 101L NAME _Aree Ellis___ Semester: Fall 2022 SECTION (Weekday and time) __Wed 8:30am-11:30am__ Score: 48/51 Homework #2: MINERALS Homework: Read Chapters 1 and 2, and answer the following questions (this homework is due at the start of the Minerals lab): 1. What is the geologic definition of a mineral (list everything)? - Naturally occurring - Crystal Structure - Physical properties determined by chemical composition and atomic arrangement - Mostly inorganically formed, Some cases can be organically formed 2. What is the value of quartz on the Mohs Hardness scale?_7__ 3. What is the value of diamond on the Mohs Hardness scale?_10 _ 4. In reality (using the Knoop scale), how many times harder is diamond than quartz? Using the Knoop scale, diamond is 8,200 times harder than quartz. 5. What do you look for to identify cleavage planes in a mineral sample? To identify cleavage planes in a mineral sample, you look for a single flash of light reflected when analyzing a mineral sample by looking at the minerals surface. 6. What is the chemical formula for Quartz? __ SiO 2 _ 7. What are striations? Striations are thinly, parallel grooves present on cleavages. 8. Tables 2.2A - 2.2F allow you to sift through a number of observations and measurements while trying to identify mineral samples. What are 4 mineral properties that these tables use? Hardness, Streak, Cleavage, Color 9. List the most useful (according to the book) diagnostic property or properties of the following minerals: Galena: Obvious metallic luster, 3 perfect cleavages that intersect at 90 degrees, high specific gravity Sulfur: Ore Mineral Calcite: Forms in veins and open holes on rocks, 3 directions of cleavage are not at 90 degrees to eachother, bubbles when in contact with dilute hydrochloric acid.
Quartz: Hardness, Conchoidal fracture, vitreous to greasy luster Epidote: Accessory/Minor Mineral Please read the supplemental information ( Minerals_reading_latest.pdf ) in the supplemental reading folder on Laulima . It will be really useful for you to have access to your lab book during class.
