Lab 1 GEOL 1121 Name ………………….. Scientific method and Introduction to Geology The scientific method is a series of steps followed by scientific investigators to answer specific questions about the natural world. The steps of the scientific method are as Observation, Question, Hypothesis, Experiment, Results, Conclusion. 1) Explain the term “science” in your own words. (2 pts) Science is the practice of theorizing, researching, and confirming an idea or a question that often comes from a bigger structure/event. 2) Make your own observations about something around you. It could be something in your house that is happening, something you see outside your window, something you remember seeing on campus. For each observation, write a hypothesis about WHY the thing you observed happened. Finally, write and explanation of how you would test your hypothesis. Please do this for three observations and fill in the table. (9 pts) Observation Hypothesis (why the thing you observed happened) How would you test the hypothesis
I saw on tiktok either two young adults or two middle aged men having a dance off on campus on the first day of school, mid-day. I hypothesized that the two men either already knew each other and ended up talking about a topic that related to dancing and then led to an dance off. I would talk to the men and anyone else who witness the before, during, and after of the dance off to confirm my hypothesis. My friend recently had a break up with her boyfriend of fourth months. My hypothesis is that there was a lack of communication between both parties causing an mis-communication throughout the relationship thus ending it. To confirm my hypothesis, I would refer to both my friend and her now ex- boyfriend and get both their sides of the story to see if they match up. I would also take any observations I had of them and talk to others who have witness their relationship up close. Temperatures this summer season have been a lot higher/hotter than last year around the same time. My hypothesis is that climate change is starting to directly effect our daily lives, starting with rising temperatures. To confirm my hypothesis, I would collect data of what temperatures are now and compare them to what temperatures were of last year around the same time. 3) What is an example of something you have heard at some point in your life that is a hypothesis but was presented to you as a theory? (2 pts) Newton’s theory of light was a hypothesis and theory which was “presented” or shown to me when I was in middle school. It can also be viewed as a law, which discusses the interworking’s of light and how it reflects color, as well as the spectrum of colors we as humans can’t see.
4) What is one scientific law you learned in high school or in any other science class? (2 pt) I remember learning the law of conservation of mass in my earth sciences class in my senior year. 5) This graph shows the weather on GSU campus from May 11, 2020. What was the temperature at 9 am? Make sure to include units! (2 pts) At GSU campus on May 11, 2020 at 9 am it was 55 F. 6) Does this graph represent observations or hypotheses? Why? (4 pts) This graph represents observations not hypotheses because it’s only showing data on temperatures, wind speeds, gust, and precipitation of a certain day and different times, not making an educational guesses to why these temperature are happening. All that is displayed is data or research. In other words, it’s a handful of observations. 7) Using that same graph, make two more observations about the weather that day. (2 pts)

It’s the hottest on May 11, 2020 at GSU campus at around 3 pm, with a temperature of approximately 70 F. On the same day, at the same place, the lowest temperatures are at 7 am with a temperature of 50 F. 8) Now, here is the weather from April 29, 2020. What do you observe was different from this day than May 11 th ? What is a hypothesis that would explain these observations? How would you test that hypothesis? (6 pts)
Now let’s look into some basic math problems. 9) A car travels 5 miles in 20 minutes. How fast was it traveling (in miles/min) (2 pts) If the car travels 5 miles in 20 minutes, then in 1 minute, the car travels 0.25 miles per minute. 10)How fast was it traveling (in mph) (2 pt) In one hour, that same car travels 15 miles. Therefore, this car is traveling 15 miles per hour. 11)A car was traveling at 60 mph for 30 minutes. How far did it travel, in km? (3 pts) In one hour, this car travels 120 miles. Therefore, in km, this car travels about 193 km in an hour. 12)A stick is 0.5 m long. How long is it in inches? (2 pts) If a stick is 0.5 m long, then in inches it is 19.68 inches. Since, one meter is around 39.39 inches.
13)A rock has a surface area of 3 in 2 . What is the surface area in cm 2 ? Remember: in 2 = in*in and both units need to be converted. (4 pts) I got around 19 cm2 or precisely around 19.3548 cm2 Introduction to Geology Geology is the science that deals with the earth's physical structure and substance, its history, and the processes that act on it. 14) Is the earth a dynamic system? If so, explain why in your own words. Earth is a dynamic system because earth is always in constant motion, for example. the actually planet itself is always moving around the sun. 15) Listed below are general things we use/find in everyday life. Can you think of ways geology has affected for the construction, destruction, usage, or behavior of these items? Item How geology has affected for the construction, destruction, usage, or behavior of the item Pencil Well pencils are usually made from trees, which runs back to geology since geology is about earth itself and it many different systems and functions. Fossil fuel Fossil fuels have been proved time and time again how dangerous they are for our planet which shows how its contributes to the destruction of our planet. The ancient city of Pompeii

Pompeii is an good example of how human made towns or cities have been affected by geology as the town was destroyed by volcanic ash which is a big point in geology as it helps form or change rocks. Atlanta subway system The subway system in Atlanta has destroyed a part of geology since it’s been dug out to be place throughout Atlanta, mostly taking out a lot of plants and small bugs. Lake Lanier Any lake is good example of what geology is represented. 16) What major do you study? How do you think geology and your major are connected? I study journalism as my major and I believe that geology can definitely be linked back to journalism since journalism is such a huge career, and the main point of the path is to report news, whether that is on a news channel or for a newspaper. Geology can be a topic that many journalists cover on a daily basis or once in a while. Especially with climate change being on everyone’s mind these days (for good reason). That is how I believe my major and geology can be connected.
