Lab 3 – Minerals GEOL 1121 Name: …………………. Activity 1 Properties of Minerals Using the link below, identify the minerals and describe their properties http://profharwood.x10host.com/GEOL101/Labs/Minerals/index.htm Mineral Name: Cleavage (Y/N) Color: Hardness: Fracture: Luster: Sample 1 Gypsum 1 White 2 Irregular Non- metallic Sample 3 Pyrite 0 Gold 6 Irregular metallic Sample 4 Quartz 0 clear 7 Conchoidal Non- metallic Sample 9 Orthoclase 2 Pink 6 Irregular Non- metallic Sample 10 Halite 3 Clear 2 Conchoidal Non- metallic Sample 11 Muscovite 1 Clear 2 Irregular Non- metallic Sample 14 Fluorite 4 Clear 4 Irregular Non- metallic Sample 17 Calcite 3 Clear 2 Conchoidal Non- metallic Sample 19 Biotite 1 Black 3 Irregular Non- metallic Sample 20 Talc 1 Gray 1 Irregular Non- metallic
Lab 3 – Minerals GEOL 1121 Name: …………………. Activity 2 Uses of Minerals With the chart in the resource document provided in iCollege as a guide, dig deeper into your understanding of the properties of minerals by identifying how we use them in our lives. You’ll explore a selection of minerals, products of minerals, and then provide your reasoning as to why each particular mineral is matched to specific products . For example, a diamond has a hardness of 10. So, if I provided the blade of a band saw as an example item in this activity, you might describe how in order for the saw to cut into hard materials, it would need to be made up of a mineral that was the hardest of them all! Hardness is only one of the properties that you could use in your reasoning to match items to minerals, so be sure to look at the chemical formulas for clues and consider other properties as well. Note that you may not have seen all of these minerals in lab, but you are welcome to go about your research using Google. Good luck! INSTRUCTIONS: There are 15 minerals to choose from as listed in the “minerals in our everyday lives” guide. You only have to correctly match TEN of the minerals provided in the guide to the below items and state your reasoning as to why this mineral is used for these products and how you came to know that answer (e.g., diamonds are used in saw blades because they are the hardest mineral and can be useful in cutting through many materials). You should use the rest of the hand out and Google to determine the reason the mineral is used for this purpose. Remember: it does not have to be because of the hardness. Mineral Products Mineral Name Why THIS Mineral? Toothpaste Fluoride After searching on google, it states that fluoride is the key to fighting tooth decay and helps with making our enamel harder and more resistant. Sandpaper, Glass Quartz On the handout given to us, it states that quartz can be commonly found in both glass and sandpaper Table Salt Halite The handout states that table salt has halite in it Jewelry Pyrite The handout states that pyrite is used for jewelry Baby Powder Talc After going on google, its states that talcum powder is in baby powder, which adds up to what the handout says, since talc is a white powdery substance that is used on cosmetics and pharmaceuticals Pencils Graphite This is common knowledge that pencils are made with graphite, but to confirm I went on google and it confirmed that graphite is used for pencils Drywall Gypsum That handout states that gypsum is used in not only drywall but other architectural products like cement Sparkly Eye Shadow Muscovite The handout states that this mineral is used in cosmetics and makes glitter
Lab 3 – Minerals GEOL 1121 Name: …………………. Antacids Magnesiu m After searching on google, that was the first answer to pop up Ceramics, Glossy Paper, Anti-Diarrheal Medicine Fluorite The handout states that it is used in ceramics Duracell Battery Zinc I used google and it stated a couple different ones, but I choose zinc since it keeps popping up Aluminum Foil Magnesiu m Google gives me multiple answers such as iron and zinc in aluminum foil. However, through out different sources, magnesium seems to be the common answer, so that’s what I choose Microdermabrasion Corundum After searching what microdermabrasion is, it stated that this mineral was used it in Skin Care Potassium Google states there are multiple different minerals used in skin care, but this was the only one mentioned on the handout so I decided to go with Potassium Fertilizer Potassium On google it states that fertilizer uses potassium among a couple of different minerals in it Green Fireworks Barium When using google, it states that barium is used to produce bright green colors
