1. The total size of the Snapshot Serengeti matrix is approximately 40,000 km (E-W) by 29,000 km (N-S) (use the map on page 31) 1. I came up with the answer 40,000 km (E-W) by 29,000 km (N-S) by looking back at the heat map I created and seeing the numbers on the x and y axis (which have longitude and latitude). 2. What are the three limitations of this study design? 1. The Snapshot Serengeti study, which uses automated photography that is triggered by heat and motion sensors, offers some very valuable insight into wildlife ecology. However, nothing can ever be perfect, and this study design doesn’t come without its limitations. There are potential biases in the detection where it could detect some larger or possibly more active species in the wildlife compared to the smaller less active species. Depending on where the camera is situated, there could be a limited field of view, there could be some weather-related issues preventing the best quality snapshots. You would have to be very intentional and strategic with the way you place the camera. There is also a gap in capturing detailed behaviors effectively since we’re only getting a small glimpse of what truly goes on in the wildlife. 3. List the websites you used to background research and what are 3 points that you learned? 1. I decided to use www.serengeti.org website to gain a little more insight into what the snapshot serengeti truly is. 2. One thing I learned through researching and exploring this page is that the great migration which includes the wildebeest, zebra, and Thomsons gazelles that take place in the Snapshot Serengeti of Tanzania is the largest ungulate migration on earth. 3. Another interesting thing I learned was related as well to our lectures and that is that biodiversity is being lost at a greater rate than at any time since the last ice age. 4. Finally, the last thing I learned was how impactful this snapshot serengeti study truly was. I initially it was to simply peer into the wildlife habits and patterns; however, it is so much bigger than that. If we manage to protect large areas of wilderness, we can make a large contribution to the extent of increasing the amount of time we have to reverse (or limit) the effects of climate change. So instead of the scary number of having less than 2 decades left to make a large influence on the climate, we can increase the time.
