1. Why does the Bay of Fundy between Nova Scotia and New Brunswick have a tidal bore and a tidal range of over 15 meters (50 feet) while Chesapeake Bay has no bore and much lower tides? Look at a map to help you with this question. Remember due to the conditions you're researching the carriers can only leave Norfolk at high tide. For you history buffs relate this to the Inchon landings during the Korean War. Eastern Canada's Bay of Fundy is located off the Atlantic coast of North America. The Fundy Bay borders Nova Scotia on one side and New Brunswick and the tip of Maine on the other. Natural forces have converged to make the Bay of Fundy subject to significant tidal ranges, earning the Bay the designation of being home to the world's highest tides. What contributes to the Fundy phenomenon? The Bay of Fundy experiences two high tides a day. Because of the mutual gravitational attractions between the Earth and the Moon, a tidal bulge is created on the side of the Earth closest to the Moon as well as on the opposite side of the Earth. As the Earth rotates on its axis, the Bay of Fundy enters one bulge and approximately twelve hours later the second one. The Fundy bottom slopes upward like a funnel, from its mouth to its head, which forces incoming water to rise. The tide is 11 feet along Nova Scotia's southwest shore. As it makes its way up the Bay, it increases in height up to 53 feet in the Minas Basin. A bore forms when water from incoming tides is funneled from a wide bay into a narrower tidal river channel. The water rushes in with such force that it goes against the current and forms a wave or tidal bore that travels backwards. The bore sweeps in, covering hundreds of feet in minutes. In the Battle of Incheon, American forces achieved a strategic masterpiece in the Incheon landing in September 1950. The American forces had to wait until 19:50 for the tide to rise, allowing another group of forces to land..Recently a massive ice shelf, larger than the island of Jamaica, broke off of the Wendell Ice Shelf on the Antarctic Peninsula, and most likely the remnants of the shelf could end up near New Zealand. In years to come, perhaps the evolution of knowledge will turn our understanding of gravity on its head, replacing it with more and more complex mathematical formulas that will make tidal theory seem ridiculously simplistic. Or, perhaps we will have done away with formulas and reverted to simply enjoying natural phenomena without the need for explanations.
