Environmental Analysis Exploring Our World with Remote Sensing With remote sensing technologies, scientists can obtain and analyze large quantities of data without having to collect it by hand. How have land use and environmental conditions changed as a result of human activities? Remotely sensed data can help us answer that question. Open Google Earth Pro TM (see https://www.google.com/earth/versions). Use the Search function to go to Elwha River, WA. 1. What is the site’s elevation where the Elwha River drains from Lake Aldwell? 2. What is the condition of Lake Aldwell? Use the historical imagery function (symbol that looks like a clock), and use the Polygon tool to make measurements. 3. Go to imagery for 2009. Lake Aldwell is located at approximately 48º04’39” N and 123º34’25” W. What is the site’s elevation where the Elwha River drains from Lake Aldwell? 4. For 2009, estimate Lake Aldwell’s surface area in square meters. 5. Reservoirs are never uniformly deep, but assume that the lake averaged 12 meters in depth. How many cubic meters of water did the lake hold in 2009? 6. Using Google Earth Pro, estimate when the Elwha Dam was removed. How did you determine this? Return to the most recent imagery. 8. In river miles (the distance the water travels downstream), how far is the site of the old dam from the mouth of the Elwha River, where it empties into the Strait of Juan de Fuca? (Use the Path tool.) 9. Describe the mouth of the river. From where did the material there come?
