Environmental Analysis Surface Temperatures Seen from Space Data: Surface Temperatures Polar-orbiting satellites used for climate research gather raw temperature data. With the NASA Worldview tool, for instance, we can use these data to examine mechanisms that control surface temperatures. Activities Go to https://worldvie.earthdata.nasa.gov/ . in the “layers” tab turn on the “Place Labels” overlay, click “Add Layers” then add the “Latitude-Longitude Lines” overlay (located in “All”), and change the Timeline at the bottom of the map from “Days” to “Months”. View several different months in various years. 1. The default display shows cloud cover and land color as if viewed from space. Notice that some regions of Earth are completely white. Where are these regions? Qualitatively, what are temperatures like there? 2. One region is always tan with almost no cloud cover. Where is this region, and what are temperatures like there? Add the “Land Surface Temperature (Day) Terra/Modis” overlay; hide the “Corrected Reflectance (True Color)” base layer. Temperature is given in kelvins (see Figure 4-2 ). 3. Zoom out to see the entire world, and alternate between the most recent February and August land-surface temperatures. Where is the difference between February and August the least? Why? 4. Where is the difference between February and August land-surface temperatures the greatest? Why? Add the “Sea Surface Temperature (L3, Day, Monthly, Thermal, 4km) Terra/MODIS” overlay; hide the “Land Surface Temperature (Day) Terra/Modis” overlay. 5. Alternate between the most recent February and August sea-surface temperatures. Are Northern Hemisphere oceans warmer in February or August? Why? 6. Are Southern Hemisphere oceans warmer in February or August? Why? Add back the “Land Surface Temperature Terra/Modis” overlay, and go to the most recent view on the Timeline. Add the “Land Surface Temperature (Night)” overlay. Zoom in to the West Coast of the United States. 7. Alternate between day and night land-surface temperatures. Is the ocean warmer or cooler than the land during the day? At night? Why?
