1.
Location and Connectivity:
What are the absolute and relative locations of your selected region? How does this region connect
to others?
The absolute location of the Korean Peninsula is 37.5665 N, 126.9780 E. The Korean Peninsula is in East Asia. The relative location of the Korean Peninsula is South of China. The sea of Japan is to the east of the Korean Peninsula, while the Yellow Sea is to the west. The Korean Peninsula’s land mass is 220,847 km (

), not including the surrounding islands of
Jeju Island, Dokdo, and Ulleung, which are a part of the Korean Peninsula. North Korea shares a connection by land with China, while South Korea shares a connection with others by air and sea. 2.
Physical Characteristics:
How would you describe the climate, physiography, landscape, and natural hazards of your selected region? Address at least three of the physical characteristics listed above for this worksheet.
Note:
This is part of the Place theme of geography.
The Korean Peninsula has varying climates from North to South. The Northern region of the Korean Peninsula is cooler and dryer, while the southern region of the peninsula is warmer and wetter. The Korean Peninsula varies in topography and geography. Different areas are comprised of different features. The south and west areas are comprised of plains, while the north and east are comprised of mountainous regions. At least 70% of the Peninsula is mountainous (

. The Korean Peninsula also has 5,255 miles of coastline. Some natural hazards that the Korean Peninsula must deal with are typhoons (hurricanes), earthquakes, flooding, air pollution and tsunamis (Nijman, 2020). 3.
Human Characteristics:
What are the language
families/groups, religions, races, and cultures of your selected region? What are the region’s population density and economic development? Address at least three of the human characteristics listed above for this worksheet.
Note:
This also is part of the Place theme of geography.
The language of the Korean Peninsula is mostly Korean. There are different dialects of the language spoken in different regions, and sometimes those who speak a certain type of dialect can not be understood by others who speak a different Korean dialect. English is becoming a popular language for the Korean peninsula. Buddhism is a prominent religion in the Korean Peninsula. Christianity is becoming another popular religion with 30% of the population of the peninsula being Christian. The Korean Peninsula is comprised of 99.3% Korean ethnicity. This area is on of the most homogenous areas, where the majority of the population who lives here is of the same ethnicity (

). The other small percent is that of Chinese and Japanese descent. The Korean Peninsula is a densely populated area of East Asia. The Korean Peninsula has a population of 77 million people (Nijman, 2020). North Korea has a smaller population than South Korea. While North Korea is known to be run under a communist dictatorship, which many people flee from, South Korea is run under a vibrant democracy (Nijman, 2020). The Democratic South Korea is known to be an economic powerhouse and has built up its economy to reflect economic growth.

Human/Environment
Interactions:
How do the physical and human characteristics interact
to produce notable observations of the landscape in your selected region? Address at least three of this worksheet's human/environmental characteristics listed above.
The Korean Peninsula landscape is notably changed by human development due to the industrialization of certain parts of the region. The western coast of the peninsula is more industrialized than any other area. This creates an issue of air, soil, and water pollution. The major issues are similar for both North Korea, and South Korea. North Korea suffers from issues of water pollution, deforestation, and soil erosion, while South Korea suffers from water pollution due to sewage backup, and industrial runoff from the many industrial centers (

. These environmental issues affect the soil and drinking water for the humans who live in this area. The problem that faces the Korean Peninsula is not just caused by the people who live there, the issues are caused by neighboring countries, such as China and Mongolia, which carry Asian dust to the Korean peninsula region
(
Smith, Brett. (2019, August 08). The Asian dust affects the landscape of the region by creating a dense fog and affecting the breathing of the inhabitants in the region. Agriculture and manufacturing are leading the region of South Korea. 5.
Movement:
With how much ease and ability do ideas, goods, and people flow in and out of your selected region? What drives this movement?
As a result of having two Koreas, North and South, movement in this region is different for both sides. North Korea is tightly controlled by a dictatorship which controls what comes in and goes out of that region. North Korea and China are allies in trade (Nijam, 2020). South Korea on the other hand has an abundance of international allies that share goods and services with the region. Goods such as electronics, appliances and automobiles are moved locally and internationally from South Korea. The high-speed rail system provides movement of goods and people locally in
the region, while air travel and boat liners provide more movement. References: Geography of the Korean Peninsula (thoughtco.com)
