Milestone Two A. Spatial data There are many different sources of data that will be helpful in creating a plan to help preserve and reestablish the population for Storm Wing Falcons. One key fact to focus on when assessing the data that we are provided with for the Storm Wing Falcons is the environment surrounding them. So far, I have focused on two key data points about the environment of these birds. The first being the food source for the birds, the turquoise bellied snail. This snail is only found on soil containing dacite. It is also mentioned that all of these birds’ nests are always found within a mile of their food nests. So I will use the geology shapefile for the environment of the falcons, and see where the dacite is most present. This is the area that the snails will most likely reside, attracting the flacons also. I will compare this area with the closable roads and areas, staying away from those restricted from closing. Specifically, I will be using the AZ highways and Indian Reservation shapefiles to pinpoint the areas that have dacite in the soil and are away from roads, or near smaller roads that could be closed. This is different from other spatial data in the way it combines the use of environmental and manmade data to compare to help conserve a species. B. Organization I will organize the data by first introducing the environment and the data about the snails and how this connects to the area of the falcons’ nest. From there I will introduce the nesting habits of the falcons’, to show how particular and rare their nesting process is. This is to show the importance of the issue. Then, I will introduce the data about the road system and explain which roads close to the areas that can be closed, and which cannot. I will also discuss how roads and other manmade noise effects the nesting habits of the
falcons. I believe that this data should be organized in this order, because I think it introduces the issue in a way that makes sense and all of the data can be easily connected. C. Quality The spatial data that I used to research this was all provided to me within the project, and in the spatial databases given to me to use with project. I am not sure of the exact source of the information and was unable to find it, but I would presume that it was government or some equivalent level of reliability. In that case the data would be as reliable as possible and would have little to no inaccuracies. The type of spatial data is affected by the quality because when dealing with very specific details like this with many conflicting parties, errors could throw off the whole effort with a wrong border or area mislabeled. This is why it is important to ensure that the data is good quality and reliable, which I believe my data is.
