Geography 352: Lab 5
Sustainability and Urban Development
: A Case Study of Urban Development in Europe and
North America Aim:
This lab is designed to compare and contrast two sustainable urban developments in Europe
and North America. Using “Google Earth Online” to make observations and selected readings
provided you will answer the following questions for each location. Learning Objectives:
By the completion of this lab, you will be able to:
Understand some of the similarities and differences of sustainable community design and planning in Europe and North America
Think critically about how and why the development of communities differ between and
within these communities of focus.
Think critically about how forms of mobility shape the development of communities and
place.
Part 1. Examples of a Sustainable Urban Development in Europe
Example 1: Vauban – Sustainable Community Development in Freiburg Germany:

1.
After reviewing the overview of Vauban in the article and website and from your own observations, provide examples of how resident’s participation in the planning process of the community have influenced the community. (250 words max) Screen shots of images can be used but not required. Vauban, a sustainable community development in Freiburg, Germany, was planned and developed with extensive community input. This involvement has had a variety of effects on the community. For example, the structure of the neighborhood has been intended to support sustainable forms of transportation such as cycling and walking with input from locals. The streets are small, and the speed limits are low, ensuring that pedestrians and cyclists are safe. Public transportation is also provided, and the town has a vehicle-sharing program, which reduces the need for individual vehicle ownership.
The community's energy system is another instance of community involvement. Vauban's energy system is decentralized, including solar panels, biomass boilers, and a combined heat and power plant. The members of the neighborhood were involved in the development and construction of this system, which had helped reduce energy consumption and emissions levels in the area. Furthermore, the community has a waste management system that includes recycling and composting.
2.
Discuss and provide examples of mobility (transportation, walkability, etc.) in Vauban with respect to community amenities and commuting to the center of the city. (250 words max) Screenshots of images can be used but not required. Vauban is a pedestrian-friendly community with a large network of cycling routes and walkways. Residents can easily commute to the city center thanks to the availability and accessibility of public transportation. The community, for example, includes a tram stop that allows direct access to the city center. Additionally, the community has a restricted number of on-street parking places, which encourages residents to unreasonable public transportation and bicycles. People may walk or ride their bikes to numerous neighborhood amenities such as stores, schools, and recreational facilities which are designed to be within reasonable regions.
3.
Provide at least 4 examples of sustainability initiatives and or designs within the community. (250 words max)
Vauban has several sustainability initiatives and designs that promote sustainable living. For starters, there is a car-free zone in the neighborhood, which decreases carbon emissions and encourages sustainable transportation. Second, the neighborhood contains a communal garden where people may produce their own vegetables and
fruits, improving food security and lowering food miles. Thirdly, the neighborhood features various green areas, such as parks and gardens, which allow people to engage in outdoor activities while also reducing the urban heat island effect. Finally, the neighborhood features energy-efficient structures, such as passive houses, which reduce
energy consumption and carbon emissions.

2.
Using Google Earth Online, discuss and provide examples of mobility (transportation, walkability etc.) in Garrison Woods with respect to community amenities, commuting to the center of the city or other important location in the city. (250 words max).
The community of Garrison Woods is a walking-friendly neighborhood with sidewalks and streets designed for pedestrians. A network of walkways connects people to community amenities and public transportation. Residents, for example, may quickly travel to the city center via public transportation. Additionally, there is limited on-street parking in the neighborhood, which encourages the use of public transportation and cycling.
3.
From reviewing the community in Google Earth online and the planning model document, discuss differences in the construction, planning, mobility, and any other contrasts you may observe between Garrison Woods and Vauban. (250 words max).
While there are some similarities between Garrison Woods and Vauban, there are also some differences. Garrison Woods, for example, is a mixed-use community that includes
both commercial and residential buildings, whereas Vauban is mainly a residential development. Garrison Woods' housing is also more diverse, with a mix of single-family homes, townhomes, and apartments. Garrison Woods has a wider footprint than Vauban, and there are more open areas and parks. Furthermore, Vauban has a decentralized energy system, which is not present in Garrison Woods. Finally, the streets in Garrison Woods have a more classic grid plan, whereas the streets in Vauban are meant to discourage automobile use and promote sustainable transportation choices, this may be due to the difference in size between the two cities.
