Geography 352 Lab 6 Tourism Development: Le Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast in Italy Introduction The purpose of this lab is to provide you with two examples of places of unique character and sense of place that have been heavily impacted by the tourism economy and development. Following with the global trend of mass tourism, these desirable coastal regions have become one of the top tourism destinations of the last 20 years. The Amalfi Coast was one of Europe's early tourist destinations, dating back to the 19th century. Although still very beautiful, many mistakes were made in the development and current functionality of tourism in this region. In the Le Cinque Terre region in the 1990's, the Italian government and UNESCO sought to limit the destruction of culture and environment from the growth of tourism and the depopulation of the region. In 1997 and 1999, they created the Le Cinque Terre Marine protected area, Le Cinque Terre National Park, and the region was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Learning outcomes After completing the activities in this lab, you should be able to: 1. Understand the impact of mass tourism on the culture and environment of desirable coastal communities. 2. Understand how concepts of conservation and sustainability can be implemented to preserve the culture, economy, and environment of a region impacted by tourism. 3. Understand that although humans can have a profound impact on the alteration of an environment, those impacts can become an anthropogenic landscape that is unique and in need of constant habitation or maintenance.
