The lump sum payment that will produce the required cash ±ow streams is $4,696.87
Calculations-
The lump sum payment can be calculated by ²rstly discounting the cash ±ow stream to bring
it back to the year of Anita’s 65th birthday and then further discounting it back to the current
year at age 45.
Step 1 - Calculate the value of cash ±ows at 65th birthday-
The value can be calculated by using the PV of annuity formula-
where,
PMT = Annual payments

r = rate of return
n = number of years
The value of the cash ±ow streams at 65th birthday is $12,462.21.
Step 2 - Calculate the present value of the cash ±ow streams
where,
FV = value at 65th birthday
r = rate of return
n = number of years
The present value of the cash ±ow streams is $4,696.87
Working notes-
The n for ²rst equation is calculated by subtracting the retirement age (65) from life
expectancy (85) to arrive at 20 years.
The n for the second equation is calculated by subtracting current age (45) from the
retirement age (65) to arrive at 20 years.
