Supply Chain and Logistics Policies 2 Clinton Roberts 702 SW 8th St. Bentonville, AR 72716 11/17/2023 Congressman Steve Womack 2412 Rayburn House Office Building Washington, DC 20515 Subject: Request for Reform in Supply Chain and Logistics Policies Dear Congressman Womack, I hope my letter finds you well. My name is Clinton Roberts, and I am writing you today regarding a supply chain policy matter that is currently impacting our local businesses and community. As we try to find efficiencies in our supply chain and logistics systems, this industry plays a critical role in the economic well-being of our state. I'm writing you to bring attention to the current policy impacting the taxation structure on fuel used by freight transportation companies. The current tax policy creates a burden on businesses that are engaged in the movement of freight within the supply chain and transportation industry. As you know, the transportation industry is a significant part of our economy and links suppliers to consumers, creating the flow of products throughout the US.
Supply Chain and Logistics Policies 3 The current fuel tax policy disproportionately affects small and medium-sized businesses in the supply chain in the freight transportation sector. These businesses are the backbone of our local economy and provide employment opportunities, and support regional growth in the state of Arkansas. The current tax policy on fuel not only increases operational costs for these businesses but it also trickles down to the goods and services that the customer ultimately sees. Considering the following points, I ask that you reconsider the current policy and push to reform the current fuel tax structure. 1. Introduce a tiered tax rate system that takes into account the fuel efficiency of transportation vehicles. This would encourage and incentivize supply chain businesses to invest in more fuel-efficient technology while also reducing their tax burden with a policy focused on environmental sustainability. 2. Create tax credits for businesses in the supply chain industry that have adopted environmentally sustainable Practices that encourage alternative fuel utilization and the use of electric vehicles. 3. Consider implementing tax exemptions or reduced tax rates for businesses that are based in and operate in the state of Arkansas. This would promote local economic development and support businesses directly serving our community. By addressing these concerns and encouraging tax reform on the current fuel tax policies, you can help drive change that supports growth for our local supply chain businesses. This would also encourage fair competition in a very competitive industry.
