December 15, 2023 GCU: ESL-440 Topic 5-Field Experience C Observations & Questions How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction? Having only one student in the classroom is a unique case for supporting and celebrating cultural diversity in the classroom. The student is able to freely express their ideas with artwork conversations. Other students are often observed asking about the differences especially now with the holiday season here. How do you leverage home language and cultural assets? A relationship with the family is the first priority. Previous years there have been questionnaires sent home to learn about the family and their native language. The questions are involved learning about their culture, especially if the family was new to the district. Other questions related to the proficiency in English and how often it is spoken within the home. This year differed from previous years though because the ELL student in the class is not new to the district and the student has older siblings that have been in this classroom. So a previous relationship was already established. How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs? Standards are set high in the classroom for all
students, this helps set them up for success. Knowing student’s prior knowledge is vital to be able to build up and so that students can demonstrate their individual strengths. All students within in the classroom receive the support they need, even when the support for one student is different from that of another. Within the classroom it is also equally important to teach that all students are different and all differences should be embraced. How do you demonstrate understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of students when establishing classroom routines and procedures? Being observant of how students respond to different situations is important, especially at such a young age. Regardless of the cultural differences within the classroom, having a morning check-in time has significantly increased the positive relationships and atmosphere within the classroom. Along with daily morning check-ins, having a visual classroom routine posted daily in the classroom helps with all student’s needs. How do you ensure inclusivity for parents when it comes to their child’s education? Constant communication is key. Ensuring that parents have a way to communicate is key, especially if the parents are not fluent in English. Also, making sure that the parents stay up to date on their child’s progress is equally as important, as well as an open line of communication so that they can provide ways they think will help their student.
How do acknowledge different cultures in the classroom during the holiday season? The holiday season can always be tricky. All holidays are welcome to be celebrated in the classroom. Over the years as an elementary school teacher, Christmas has been the only holiday celebrated in the classroom. But it has been asked what holiday or holidays each family celebrates to ensure that any others are acknowledged and celebrated. Reflection While observing Dr. Decker in the classroom I noticed her greet the students each morning with a smile, and offer a hug or high-five. When her Spanish-speaking student arrived, she greeted her with ‘Hola’ and ‘Good morning’ and the student responded with ‘Hi’ and ‘Buenos dias’. When I questioned Dr. Decker about it, she stated that she and her student previously agreed up switching up who would speak English and who would speak Spanish. This way, the student would be encouraged to practice their English speaking skills but also feel comfortable speaking in their first language, too. During their literacy lesson time, Dr. Decker enunciated words clearly and spoke slowly. Often times she would look directly at her ELL student to ensure she was focused on the directions. Dr. Decker would also ask her student if she understood the directions and for her to explain them back to her so that she knew her student comprehended the directions accurately.
