Lesson Plan 1 Title: Travel Content: Reading Time: Grade: 4th Grade TEKS: ELAR 110.6(b)(10) Author’s purpose and craft: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiples texts. The students use critical inquiry to analyze the author’s choices and how they influence and communicates meaning within a variety of texts. The student analyzes and applies author’s craft purposefully to develop his or her own products and performances. Objective(s): Students will learn the different modes of travel while using a K-W-L chart. Students will be using listening, speaking, and writing to comprehend the concept. ELPS TEKS: 74.4 (d)(1) Cross-curricular second language acquisition/learning strategies. The ELL uses language learning strategies to develop an awareness of his or her own learning processes in all content areas. For the ELL to meet grade- level learning expectations across the foundation and enrichment curriculum, all instruction delivered in English must be linguistically accommodated (communicated, sequenced, and scaffolded) commensurate with student’s level of English language proficiency. The student is expected to: ELPS: Students is expected to speak using learning techniques such as concepts mapping, drawing, memorizing, comparing, contrasting, and reviewing to acquire basic and grade- level vocabulary. Hook/Setting the Stage: 5 minutes Teacher distributes a word search (without a title), students are to find as many words as they can, then guess what the words have in common. ESL methods and strategies: 1. ELL students can use pictures and visual aids 2. ELL students can extend time for assignments to be completed Activity: Introduce the topic of Travel K-W-L chart. Teacher asks the students what they know about Travel, and records responses on LARGE K-W-L chart on chart paper or black broad Teacher reads the story about modes of travel around the world. In partners, students are to summarize the main ideas using “Get the Gist” strategy. Teacher first models this summarization strategy by summarizing the first paragraph in 10 words or less. This will be the topic sentence. Students are to summarize the rest of the story with their partner and record on their shamrock, remind them to include the topic sentence that the teacher did as part of their complete summary ESL methods and strategies :
1. ELL students will group up with a mixed level of students. This will help the, to work together with students with different level. Having discussion with other students from other levels will help students to get different ideas and understand better the lesson. 2. ELL students can use their iPad to aid them with transitions or clarification on the words they don’t understand. Extension: When students are finished Develop a new word search using words from the story on modes of travel Word search sheet provided ESL methods and strategies: 1. ELL students can team up with another student who will peer teach them different words and work together to find them. 2. ELL students will build a card file of vocabulary words and give them a grade for it. Closure: Students swap their word search with other partners Assessment: Teacher assesses the content of the summary to make sure that all pertinent information is included ESL methods and strategies: 1. ELL students can orally read their summary rather than just having written form. 2. ELL students to speak aloud so they will participate in your classroom. 1. Review the presentation on Classroom Practices for English Language Learners below (or download the attached PowerPoint presentation). 2. Download and Review the ESL Strategies document. 3. Download the "Travel Lesson Plan Sample" document above. 4. Using the Travel Lesson Plan Sample (provided), modify the lesson plan for use with ESL/LOTE students by selecting the modification you plan to use. Modifications can be found in the lesson plan study guide or a quick Internet search. You will need to go to the Texas Education Agency website to find the appropriate TEKS and ELPS for the grade level you choose. The TEKS and ELPS can be found under the Curriculum tab on the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills page.
