2 In comparing three different aspects of the classroom observations, I chose Cultural and Linguistic Diversity, Instructional Topic and Socio-Economic Status (SES)/Technology Used. There were many differences in culture and linguistical diversity in each video. An Elementary School in New York and a High School in California were by far the most racially diverse. The elementary school had 61% of students either Hispanic or Black and the high school had 83% Hispanic and 12% Black (2020). On the other hand, the Middle School from Kansas had a classroom that consisted of 75% White students (2020). The topics each school chose were project based. The elementary school recorded observations from germinating beansprouts. Middle school had the ability to go out and explore the school’s nature area and observe PH levels of their creek water. The high school class was seniors who started with understanding then creating Infographics for their own senior projects. Each class had activities that involved communicating with peers and recording information to be organized later on. Each class had very different SES situations. The middle school appeared to be the most funded and had the most technology available to their population. Middle schoolers had their own tablets and lab equipment. The two classrooms with the most diversity and students from the poorer backgrounds had noticeably less available to them. One example is that the elementary school had white boards and markers to use, compared to the middle school which had tablets for each student. 3 Brown Vs Board of Education is a legal influence that I felt was something visible in each classroom. Each one of these videos showed classrooms of diverse culture and background, even in the middle school in Kansas that was 75% white, they still had 11% Asian and 10% Black/Hispanic (2020). Without Brown Vs. Board of Education, I don’t know when we would have seen classrooms like these examples. Giving kids of color the equity and opportunity to partake in school that are up to standards is a huge help in racial equality and equity in schools. The High School example was that of a college prep academy which had 83% Hispanic and 12% Black (2020). The elementary school was also a good example of the influence that Brown Vs Board meant for students of color. 61% of the students in the elementary classroom that are black or Hispanic (2020). The students in the elementary observation were able to be in a classroom with an active and engaged teacher with use of basic technology for education. To think that there was a time that these kids weren’t allowed or even wanted in school is unfathomable. The progress that has been made so far should continue forward. 4 High-Leverage learning was visible in each classroom I observed. High-leverage practices are critical for student engagement and learning. The elementary school had examples of high- leverage learning in various forms. For example, the teacher noticed that there was some confusion on a term, so the teacher leads a group discussion on the subject. By asking a student about the term, “germination” the students could participate in active listening and comprehension of the material. In the middle school observation, the teacher designed a lesson on testing Ph levels in the water for their local creek. She has subsequent lessons that involved
the students bringing water samples from their homes back into the classroom, that showed that the teacher had planned ahead for the task while also explaining and modeling the content for the students to complete. In the high school observation, the teacher actively engages with each student to review and communicate on their porojects. With an in-depth project like a senior project, the teacher wants to provide oral and written feedback to the students. In doing so the teacher also provides a good example of checking student understanding during the lesson. T. (2020). Claims, Evidence and Reasoning: Lesson.
