As an educator, it is important to provide all students with an education, regardless of their disabilities. A differentiated lesson plan will help educators meet their student’s needs. By modifying lessons and assignments, students with disabilities will be able to be successful in the classroom. "Students do not simply store knowledge they hear; each student learns in a particular, personal way" (Manen, as cited in Tomlinson, 2014).
To create a differentiated lesson plan, and accommodate my students who cannot read at the appropriate grade level and students with IEPs, I made several modifications to my current lesson plans. For quizzes, I have created different versions that have different types of questions. Students with no IEPs, disabilities, accommodations, etc. would normally have to write a short response, while students with diverse needs would have a multiple choice questions. This allows students to be able to more effectively show what they know because they may not always be able to put it in their own words. When it comes to a fill in the blank section, the students with diverse needs would have a word bank with reduced options. My students whom are unable to read on the appropriate grade level will work 1-on-1 with a special education teacher who will read to them and will also have the lesson put into google classroom where they can use text to speech tools. They may also only read a summary instead of the whole text. This helps with student processing and understanding. These students may also take the quiz or test orally where they tell the teacher their answer. On a test, students may be given questions that are opinion based, but have no right or wrong answer. When it comes to the final exam, the student will be able to select the assignment they complete. They can select to create a project, a PowerPoint, write an essay, or even take the exam if they are confident. Students who require accommodations due to an IEP will work in smaller class sizes, have a seat next to the teacher’s desk and receive extended time on their assignments.

Regardless of a student’s learning ability, disability, IEP, etc. they all have the right to an education. It is our job as an educator to provide them with a differentiated and modified lesson plan so they have an equal opportunity to succeed in the classroom.
