The Sorcerer's Apprentice which was written by Paul Dukas is a symphonic composition g which is programmatic based on the poem by Goethe. After I did listen to this piece the various elements that did speak out to me were the different tempos, those of the melodies that were very mysterious as well as those of the freedom of the formation well as that of the design and different pitches. This specific poem which is symphonic tells an enchanting story and it induces induce of the feeling which are panic, excitement, as well as that of fear. Furthermore, the sorceress apprentice is a very good example of programmatic music, as it uses music to tell a magical tale to the audience. One of the ways that Dukas was able to achieve this masterpiece was by taking several details from that of the original poem which was written by Goethe and Dukas used this as a kind of guide along with many use numerous musical attributes such as the thematic music and the orchestration as well as that of the whole form of itself. You can see evidence of the semblance of sonatas and their form as well as the themes that parallel that the story structure of the original poem which was written by Goethe. Furthermore, Dukas does create four main themes in that the introduction represents those of the characters in this story of the sorcerer's apprentice one of these being that of the water and one for the apprentice one of these to personify the brooms, and then again one for the sorcerer.
That of the sorcerer's apprentice does start in a very peaceful state as that if the sorcerer does leave his workshop, those of the chords are very airy and very mysterious of the flutes and those of the muted strings and these do a very good job with starting the symphony off. When we do meet that of our protagonist with just a single melody which was created by the oboe and the clarinet as well as the flute as well as the sound of the harmonics that make a glass sound which was made by a harp and we do hear this sound all through this monothematic work. That of the magic itself is represented by a single Crack from a timpani and those of cymbals that are crashing represent that of the age that chops the broom in half. Dukas does use tonal movements that are large scale to be able to create tensions through harmonic dissonance as well as abrupt tonal as well as thematic shifts and dualities. Furthermore, the final movement feels almost like the calmness after a storm occurs and when all that was wrong and occurred is finally righted. Paul Dukas's ability in its way to use literature in its form and structure with this musical composition is a masterpiece. It is as if you can almost hear as well as feel the tensions rise as those of the brooms rise after splintering to do the chores of the apprentice and also as the apprentice begins to lose control over the brooms and the sorcerer's shop gets flooded with the water. And you can hear the battle that is ongoing between the apprentice and the brooms throughout this piece. Furthermore, when the broom does eventually get created into two pieces and begins their work with diligence the broom's theme is broken up into two voices as well. Paul Dukas does a very good job at developing and with creating the theme for the characters that are very crucial as well as the things that are important in this work. Furthermore, dukas have created symbolism by using devices that are musical such as the counterpointing of the themes and it does reflect the actions that happened in Goethe's poem. On their very own these devices create very potent music but when put along with the text they create something that is much more meaningful. (Griglio, 2020). Fantasia and this music were composed for the theater as it does have a story that goes along with it as well as a theme. This piece was created during the romantic period of music and this period represents the creation of the form structures that are within the composition which make these pieces a lot more enthusiastic. Furthermore, the focus was placed on the reason as well as the purpose behind the music. It does evoke emotions from the audience and this in turn brings the music that was written to life.
Now I have watched Fantasia Numerous times within the last 29 years it was always a favorite of mine as it had multiple stories and it seemed more grandeur than any other Disney movie as a Disney adult I can say that this is still one of not my very favorite Disney movie of all time and I do still feel the same emotional reactions that I did before when I was just a child. That of the mystery and the excitement along with the panic and chaos. I now have a much more knowledgeable understanding when it comes to this piece as well as all of Fantasia since I started this class. Sources Counts, J. (2021, September 22).
