Logical fallacy in advertisement Chizoma Ikegwuruka Professor Carlton Downey English 1302 Houston Community College 24 December 2023
Logical Fallacies in Advertisement Logical fallacies are errors or mistakes in reasoning that can make an argument seem stronger than it is but can be proven wrong with further examination. The advertising industry makes use of logical fallacies in other to gain consumers. Whether technology, edible products, or cosmetics, logical fallacies are often used to help their products sell. An ad that uses logical fallacies is the Samsung SLBS ad with the popular Korean pop boy band, “Straykids”. In this case, they employed an appeal to authority. The Ad features a celebrity group endorsing their product without providing substantial evidence that their product is the best. The authority figures endorsement is used as primary support for the product without addressing the product's performance, features, or value on its own. K-pop fans (Korean pop fans) are known to be very loyal to their idols (i.e. the groups they support), and this makes their product more appealing to the target audience. “This huge celebrity uses our product; therefore, it is the best and you should use it too” This makes the product more attractive to the consumer. I believe they used this fallacy to persuade the audience because they wanted to create a positive image for their product and the company in general. This has been a common logical fallacy used in advertisements, most of which have proven to be effective.
