Literature Review: Adolescent Obesity Education
Prevention and management of obesity has the potential to have great impact on the health of adolescents. Obesity in adolescence can lead to continued obesity in adulthood in addition to, the development of preventable diseases. Education on obesity and weight management can fall short, rendering interventions null. These shortcomings may be due to educators not considering teen’s backgrounds or other barriers for weight management (Kebbe, et al., 2018). This paper wants to focus on a way to improve current interventions being utilized to manage obesity in adolescents. There is great importance in the identification of gaps in education when developing interventions for weight management. Adolescents are a unique population in terms of what is most important to them. Adolescents hold high value in how they are perceived by others and there is large stigma around obesity in adolescent social groups (Øen, Kvilhaugsvik, Eldal, & Halding, 2018). For instance, the lack of regard to implication of being overweight versus how they are perceived by others. Teens have vocalized being bullied or socially isolated due to being
overweight, these experiences can prevent teens from reaching out for help (Øen, et al., 2018). All these different factors need to be considered when developing education plans, in order to achieve best outcomes. Additionally, cultural differences in teens will require different education needs and this should be kept in mind before education is initiated. Educational gaps may occur when there are cultural barriers impeding families from successfully carrying out interventions. Food and lifestyle choices can be different from culture to culture and be a barrier to changes (Kebbe, 2018). These are part of a teens’ life and are very important if best outcomes want to be achieved
for the client.

It is necessary to understand the adolescent’s perspectives regarding their current weight and their lifestyle. Teens need to feel as independent as possible and the integration of their personal goals while developing education. Therefore, it is important to include what is important to a teen individually to best guide what is needed in education. In research by Kebbe, et al. (2018) adolescents refer to different barriers to healthier habits, lifestyle modifications and sleep. Other barriers that have been identified is accessibility to opportunities that promote healthier choices. Through the further development of this topic and further investigation, understanding on
needs to enhance education on weight management is the goal. While, keeping in mind what is the most important to adolescents a better intervention can be utilized in order to best control weight. While teens are not as concerned on the health implications of obesity it is important to provide continuous education of this in order to encourage better choices. With the involvement of families and support systems teens may be able to achieve better
outcomes when making lifestyle changes. Teens being a special group may benefit best from education that is personalized on a case by case basis and building rapport with professionals. Through forthcoming projects, the goal is to continue to learn what interventions have had the highest success rates.
