1-6 Assignment: Writing Notes
Introduction
As part of our assignment, we were required to choose an article for critical analysis this term. In the following paragraphs, I will address the selected article, the author's intended purpose as inferred from a literal reading of the article, the evidence from the article that supports this purpose, and the audience for which the author was writing.
Article Selection
For my term-long analysis, I selected the article "Managing Virtual Teams" by Yendor Felgate, published in African Business (Issue 479) by IC Publications Ltd in December 2020.
Author’s Purpose
Based on my analysis of the article, it appears that Yendor Felgate aims to enlighten management about the changing work environment brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. Time Magazine reports that the pandemic has resulted in the "World's Largest work from home experiment." As the number of people opting to work remotely increases, managers must adapt their strategies and approach this new situation with a fresh perspective by rethinking, reimagining, and re-engaging (Managing Virtual Teams 2020).
Evidence
After analyzing the article, the author intended to educate management about the new approach to managing virtual teams. One of the pieces of evidence provided is that managers who had poor relationships or lacked trust before the lockdown had difficulty recovering. Additionally, management has been challenged in finding the appropriate balance between too little and too much management, making it difficult to adapt to the current situation. (Managing
Virtual Teams 2020). Finally, Yendor Felgate states six recommendations for managers to Re-
Imagine, Re-think, and Re-engage with their employees as follows:
Individualization is critical.
Set Expectations early and clearly.
Adapt your workflows.
Provide the right technology.
Communication.
Support your managers.
These six recommendations will give managers the best practices for successfully managing remote teams. These points provide evidence that the author’s purpose is to educate readers.
Author’s Audience
As this article appears in a business publication, it's likely that Yendor Felgate's target audience is business executives and managers. However, the author may have encountered challenges in conveying their message to the readers, as many managers may be hesitant to adopt
new approaches like rethinking, reimagining, and re-engaging due to their familiarity with traditional management practices pre-pandemic.
