Mrs. Jackie Leonardi ENG 123 16Mar23 3-4 Annotating Sources The first source used in this assignment is “Military Readiness” by Christina L. Lyons from the CQ Researcher engine. The main idea of this article is to inform the reader of the current status of the United States military with the obstacles ahead and warfighting capabilities. The military is facing not just a budget crisis, but a personnel shortage. The service member and their own individual hurdles when it comes to mental health is a battle the DOD must resolve. Remembering the armed forces are only as strong as its personnel equipped for the mission and not ignoring the battles faced with egregious working hours. This source supports my thesis and beyond in many ways referring to ongoing military tactics in conclusion with the fights can be won with better planning. The author does an outstanding job with this article by having multiple topics covered and even a timeline of major military events. As the author mentions the two navy ships colliding, that hit home for me being a Sailor in the Navy. That proof of evidence is a key selling point in the matter that working more isn’t the solution for the armed forces that is defeated by being overworked. The second sources used for additional research was “Hybrid Work” by Susan Ladika from CQ Researcher. This article is informative around the concept that if we could work from home during a pandemic, why must we go back to a “work site”? This article is supportive of my argument around the military being overworked as a lot of what we do can be completed from home via advanced technology allowing service members the option to work remote. As mentioned in the article, even showing up in person to work a couple of times a week versus daily can still be quite beneficial in multiple regards for most professions. Working more and being overworked is a major misconception as simply being burnt out leads to multiple mistakes similarly to drinking and having impaired judgment. I experience this a lot via the navy and its honestly quite frustrating as easy tasks simply aren’t that for me. As mentioned in the
article that productivity and efficiency can be maintained with teleworking is something the military should honor to get more out of its personnel while reducing hours at work, training, and various deployments. Additionally, the last source used is the article “Governing the Seas” by Zarrin Caldwell from CQ Researcher. In this read it mentions issues that ships are having with collisions in various areas of responsibility (AORs) in the seas. The united states navy had two collisions in a year span, large part to poor training and inadequate rest. This article goes over increased demands of work with decreased personnel. Working more is becoming less “trendy” as people are searching for more jobs that can provide more of a work life balance. The united states military is lacking this great sense of humility and the human error is being noticed with more training mishaps and accidents causing major equipment repairs and personnel casualties. This source is beneficial to my argument in regard to DOD personnel being overworked as the supply for mission readiness isn’t being met by a voluntary military force and is trending to almost a mandating service obligation. If the military doesn’t reevaluate its approach on the personnel around serving the military’s hand may be forced. Honoring the need for mental/physical rest for the armed forces may be the simple solution for a stronger defense.
