EDUC 511
According to the late Bill Gates,“Technology is just a tool in terms of getting the
kids working together and motivating them, the teacher is most important.” This is such an amazing quote that it will relate to today and many years to come in education and more. Technology has changed life as we know it within hospitals, courthouses, and most importantly, within the schools. It has drastically changed the way we obtain information; and the speed where we acquire it. We live in a time where the answers are literally at the tip of our fingers. As educators, we are benefiting from the “technology boom” so to speak. With all the emergent technology becoming readily available to us; we are able to teach a certain topic on a broader wave and more effectively. However with these platforms being available to us as educators, they are also available to students who may use this technology to help assist them along in school. Hence, I will talk about the role of instructional technology in the classroom and the benefits thereof. While searching for supplemental articles to support my research I came across one that stated how teachers use technology efficiently in their classes, which is
an important issue because learning environments are being impacted by rapid developments in instructional technology. In the current study, they investigated how designing inquiry based technology enhanced one's lesson plan on the virtual platform which influences the TPACK which stands for, (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge). A total of 38 undergraduate students at a teacher education program participated in the study; the data that was gathered by the self efficacy scale
and the lesson plans developed by the pre service teachers revealed a significant increase in the TPACK self efficacy of the pre service teachers after they designed an inquiry based technology enhanced lesson plan on the virtual platform. (Kapici & Akcay, 2020)
Upon my search for additional supplemental documents, I came across an article that created a study whose goal was to determine whether students can improve their reading comprehension by using an LCD projector in a classroom. This
was used to measure students' interest and attention and to compare the accuracy of a
narrative retelling using instructional technology to a conventional read aloud format.
The article also states how technology alternatives are available in educational settings and how they are expanding at an exponential rate. Lastly, one thing that was interesting that they stated was the use of an LCD projector that makes text and images visible to all students has been suggested as a way to improve reading comprehension. Which in my opinion has been evident as a student through our middle school, high school, and now college. (Black et al., 2005)
During my orientation for my masters program we had a presentation from our EDUC 511 professor and we were in a stadium size classroom. Had to be at least 100 students in various locations of the classroom. Our professor did not have a microphone so you could imagine how hard it may have been to hear him from way in
the back if you were sitting there. However, with instructional technology, he was able
to grasp our attention with his very intriguing powerpoint on the LCD monitor in the front of the class. In his powerpoint he had his agenda, a quick digital activity for us to
try as a group, interesting quotes and facts, and lastly our technology assessment detailed with the rubric attached. It was concise and straight to the point. I felt as if he
never lost any of us during his lecture. When he was wrapping up his presentation he then emailed us all a copy of the presentation as well as our assignment so we could have access to it at our own leisure. However, there was another professor that did not use instructional technology but rather chose to talk to the entire class. I noticed that a lot of students went to the restrooms multiple times during her presentation as well as playing with their phones or laptops. I personally became quite tired listening to hours of the lecture and began to nod off honestly speaking. I saw other students doing the same. Long story short her lecture just was not engaging. I believe interactive presentations or something we as students could follow along with the instructor will help us retain the information.
I have become very proficient in creating powerpoint presentations, and I must
say I get across to my audiences quickly. My information displayed is usually very concise and straight to the point. Of course with instructional technology you have to follow up with a lecture or talking point to ensure everyone understands your objectives. I love to see the reactions to my creations and how interested individuals grow as I go through my slides.
