Nichole Hart Assignment 8 6/11/23 In doing more research, in a monolingual classroom all students share the same first language. They are also learning English. Today’s teachers are expected to meet the needs of children of a growing population of English language learners. Three classroom strategies to help meet the needs are being aware of each students language abilities, document the success when using different techniques, and make a smooth transition into the new material. First, be aware of students’ language abilities. Understanding what your student is capable of would help you better help your student and help the transition. An adapting material that could be used to help in this type of situation is to provide alternatives to responding verbally. If the child is having a hard time, make flash cards with the word in the language they speak and have the English word under it. By doing this, they can communicate and see the English word as well. Working in a school system this technique has been used and has proven success. Second, document the success when using different techniques. Create a folder with the child’s name on it and keep track of what works and what does not work. The child can adapt best when you develop your own supplemental materials. Spending a lot of time with the child allows you to see what works best for the child. Documenting and preparing different strategies will in the long run help you and the child. Last, make a smooth transition when learning new material. Be patient with the child when trying to go from learning one thing to another. It is already hard enough for them to
understand what you are saying, patience and understanding is key. If the student is having a hard time learning the new material, break the task into similar, less complex task. It may take a bit longer for them to learn it, but you will at least gain their trust that you are trying to help them. Another thing that can be done when learning new material is to tape record the material so students can replay them for clarity. Working with a math teacher who does this, it has helped students so much to be able to go back and rewatch their lesson or listen to their lesson for the day. Children learn so much in one day. Providing them with a recording could provide them great success and less stress. Understanding your students and showing them how much you care is so imperative. Going above and beyond to create lessons to better help students that have hard time with English is a big plus in my eyes. Think about it like this, it could be your child and wouldn’t you want someone who cares enough to help them? I know I would.
