The evaluation may be for your entire learning organization or an individual learning environment. Irvin, Meltzer, and Dukes (2007) established categories for evaluating and reflecting on literacy programs as a means to improvement. In this assignment, you will generate two questions for each category, research the category as it relates to the selected educational setting, locate an example which answers each question or note the gap, and provide an overall evaluation of the existing program. Based on the evaluation, you will make a recommendation for improvement in the areas in which there are gaps. You will reflect on the evaluation process and how it contributes to literacy success of learners with exceptionalities.
Step 1. Select a literacy program relative to learners with exceptionalities in an educational setting of your choice. The evaluation may be for your entire learning organization or an individual learning environment. Step 2. Use the five categories listed below established by Irvin, Meltzer, and Dukes (2007) for the evaluation: « Strengthening Literacy Development Across the Content Areas « Literacy Interventions for Struggling Readers and Writers « School Policies, Structures, and Culture for Supporting Literacy « Building Leadership Capacity « Supporting Teachers to Improve Instruction For each category, complete the following: « Generate two questions for each category. Example Questions for Strengthening Literacy Development Across the Content Areas: 1. Are collaborative discussions held on reading/writing strategies appropriate to the content areas? 2. Are a variety of texts used in content areas? « Research the category as it relates to the selected educational setting. « Locate an example which answers the question or note the gap. « Provide an overall evaluation of the existing program.
