Secondary Source Annotation Activity Worksheet Directions: After you have read the assigned secondary source and completed the annotation process, answer the questions below on this worksheet. You can type the answer for each question directly underneath each question. Please write in complete sentences as you answer each question. Save this worksheet with your answers and submit it to your instructor through Blackboard. 1. Text Overview: Who is the author and what is the title of the article? The author’s name is Asha Nadkarni and the title of the article is “Reproducing Feminism in Jasmine and ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’” 2. Text Overview: What is the name of the source where this article was published and when was this article published? The name of the source where the article was published is Feminist Studies, Inc. and it was published in Spring of 2012. 3. Text Overview: What is the author’s thesis or central argument? The author’s central argument is that the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” actually depicts gender oppression faced by women in relation to mental health issues. 4. Reflection and Response: How did this secondary source change, alter or deepen your understanding of the primary source? This secondary source deepened my understanding of the primary source by showing another side of the story that is not, purposely, shown by the author of the primary source. 5. Reflection and Response: How does the perspective presented in this secondary source connect to or differ from your perspective about the primary source? This perspective connected with mine in the sense that both mine and Asha Naskarni’s perspectives highlighted the poor treatment surrounding women’s mental health. Especially following birth. 6. Engagement with Text: Paraphrase or directly quote one important idea that the author expressed and provide a brief comment as to why you believe it is important. Remember that both a paraphrase and a direct quote require an in-text citation. “Her ability to free the woman behind the wallpaper is made possible by her descent into a madness that by the end of the story is almost entirely complete.” (Nadkarni, 219) I believe this quote is important because it gives reason to the events, in this case the girl Jane claims lives in the walls in “The Yellow Wallpaper.”
7. Engagement with Text: Paraphrase or directly quote another important idea that the author expressed and provide a brief comment as to why you believe it is important. Remember that both a paraphrase and a direct quote require an in-text citation. “Originally appearing in the New England magazine in 1892, “The Yellow Wallpaper” is Gilman’s semi-autobiographical story of taking Dr. S Weir Mitchell's “rest cure” to alleviate her depression after the birth of her daughter.” (Nadkarni, 219) I believe this quote is important because it gives background to why and what the story is truly written about, which can help to better understand what is being described in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper.” 8. Engagement with Text: Identify one source (include both author and title) that this author uses to support their argument. Susan S. Lanser, “Feminist Criticism, ‘The Yellow Wallpaper’ and the Politics of Color in America”
