Interdisciplinary ideas: Teaching nonfiction text structure.  Science Scope 042 (07). https://doi.org/10.2505/4/ss19_042_07_24   Summary : This article discusses ways in which readers can use different strategies to improve their Nonfiction reading skills. The first thing the article states is to start with a science-themed book and look for things like descriptions, cause and effect, compare, etc. Then, have a strategy for students to use to help remember the information they are reading. For instance, this article gives you the “high 5,” which is activating background knowledge, questioning, analyzing text structure, creating mental images, and summarizing. This method focuses on comprehension strategies and using different ways to understand the text more deeply. This article suggests that practicing these skills regularly is a key part of being successful. Reflection : This article was very useful for me because I loved the “high 5,” strategies. I will most likely be implementing this into my teaching because it is a key part in comprehension. With the first part of this strategy being activating background knowledge this will give students a more in depth understanding about what they will be reading by relating it to real life. Also, asking questions throughout reading is a great way to stop and think about the text rather than moving forward and being confused. This article made me realize that reading isn’t about finishing the quickest, however, about being able to fully understand everything you just read.

Science has always been one of the trickier lessons to give students and science concepts are often taught through there specific vocabulary. This article gives examples of how to implement scientific vocabulary in your desired lesson. Not only is it important to teach the correct vocabulary but allow the students to apply this in context. For example, using visual aids, hands-on activities and involving real world connections will help teach vocabulary. The author suggests using a formative assessment when assessing student understanding and giving more instruction when needed. By emphasizing the importance of scientific vocabulary teachers will ultimately help students develop a deeper understanding of the science concept as a whole. Reflection : This is a great article that helped me understand the importance of how scientific vocabulary shapes the lesson. In the beginning of this article, it states how vocabulary needs to be taught so that students can use it to communicate, and I think that is key. When students feel confident in the module’s vocabulary, they will better understand the lesson. I also liked the food chain lesson and how it involved an engaging activity followed by the discussion and independent work. When students can start to understand the vocabulary in different contexts that is how you know they have mastered the word itself.

Retrieved April 30, 2023, from https://eric.ed.gov/?id=EJ1262874  Summary: This article talks about the importance of integrating science and literacy instructions to improve learning outcomes. In the article it discusses the ways in which science and literacy instruction can be beneficial when put together. Not only will it increase student engagement, however, it will increase motivation, knowledge, and develop students critical thinking skills. The author also shares an instructional model they developed which uses science content as the basis for literacy instruction. Also, using strategies like close reading and writing activities when doing science lessons. In addition, these strategies were implemented in different grade levels and when students were tested on a performance standardized test the scores proved that this new way of integrating concepts is increasing engagement and helping students better retain information. On the other hand, this article talks a little about how this new technique for teaching can cause teachers to have an increased workload, however, the benefits are showing to be effective and helping students more than other instruction in the past. Overall, this article discusses the ways in which this new approach for teaching will hugely benefit the students in the long run. Reflection : When reading this article, I was impressed by all the benefits of implementing science and literacy concepts together. It seems to me that this approach will not only benefit students but in the long run may help teachers. Students are introduced to a variety of new terminology in science areas each day. These science terms play a critical role in weather a student will be successful or not based on their understanding of these key words. Since science vocabulary is often complex a student who is struggling to understand the meaning of these scientific concepts may struggle with the lesson as a whole. On the other hand, students who fully understand the unit’s vocabulary will more likely succeed on the assessments. In the article the author gives a few examples of how we can implement and support science vocabulary development into a lesson. For example, the author states using visual aids and graphic organizers will help provide students with new ways to learn science terminology. All in all, this article closes with the author stating just how important it is for teachers to prioritize vocabulary instruction in the science classroom. Reflection : This article stood out to me because not only does it talk about the importance of science vocabulary, but its effects on students if they lack knowledge in those areas. Having different strategies for learning new scientific terms will help students better understand the science concepts and help them on their tests. Not only will they be learning science concepts but incorporating literacy skills by using different ways to learn the vocabulary. I will be using this
new thinking in my classroom because I think science vocabulary is crucial in understanding the concept at hand.
