Response: The instrument used in the bloodletting event was a knife from the Routier's own kitchen. Question: Where was this instrument obtained? Response: This knife was obtained from the Routier's kitchen. Question: Whose DNA was found on the handle of this instrument? Response: The DNA found on the handle of the knife belonged to both Damon and Darley. Question: What trace evidence was found on the companion instrument of the murder weapon? Response: The companion instrument was a different knife from the kitchen. Trace evidence of fiberglass as well as rubber dust were found on this companion instrument. Question: What does this other evidence implicate? Response: This evidence implicates that someone took the knife from the kitchen and cut the window screen to make it look like an intruder broke in though the window. Question: What type of bloodstain pattern was found on the shoulder area of Darlie Routier's sweatshirt? Response: Cast-off blood spatter was found on the shoulder area of Darlie's sweatshirt. Question: What is the significance of the bloodstain pattern found on the shoulder
area of Darlie Router's sweatshirt? Response: The cast-off bloodstain pattern is consistent with someone drawing the knife up and slightly over their shoulder, causing some droplets of blood to fly off the knife and onto the shoulder area. Question: What is significant about the stain deposited from the wheel of the vacuum cleaner? Response: The stain deposited from the wheel of the vacuum cleaner tells us that the vacuum was rolled through an existing blood pool. This, along with blood found on the floor under the fallen vacuum, leads to the conclusion that the vacuum cleaner fell over after the bloodletting event occurred. Question: What is significant about the stains on the floor in front of the kitchen sink? Response: In front of the sink there were bloody footprints belonging to Darlie. There was evidence that someone tried to clean up the blood in this area, but luminol was used to detect the trace blood left behind. Question: What information did the outline on the carpet of the murder weapon tell you? Response: The outline of the murder weapon on the carpet, with blood pooling at the tip of the weapon, tells us that whoever was holding the knife was bleeding from their arm. The blood subsequently ran down their arm to pool up at the tip of the knife. Question: Why was the evidence located outside of the crime scene thought to be 'staged'? Response: The bloody sock found a couple blocks away was thought to be staged for a couple reasons. First, it was odd that the intruder would have left the murder weapon behind but not a bloody sock. Second, the sock was left out in the open; an intruder would likely have tried to dispose of it discretely. Question: Whose blood was found on the evidence located outside? Response: Both Devin and Damon's blood was found on the sock. Question: What blood reagent did experts use to prove or disprove any scene alterations? Response: Experts used Luminol to determine scene alterations based on trace
amounts of blood. Question: How did experts use the drip trail bloodstain evidence to prove or disprove Darlie Routier's statement that she ran after the intruder? Response: According to the drip trail left by Darlie's blood, she was moving slowly through the kitchen, not running after the assailant. If Darlie had been running, the blood drops would be elliptical instead of circular, possibly with a tail showing the direction of movement. Question: Ultimately, who do you think is responsible for the murders? Justify your response Response: Ultimately I believe that Darlie is responsible for the murders. Her story does not line up with any of the forensic evidence found, in fact the evidence points to her holding the knife and stabbing her son.
