In motorsports, Fans are the most important people to grace the racetracks, street circuits, and dirt stages; without them, there would be no reason to race. With shows like Drive to Survive and WRC+, some classes of motorsport gain fans daily, growing exponentially; however, with one of the oldest race series to exist, it is another story. NASCAR was once the second most viewed sport in the United States. However, the decline in viewership, attendance, and general interest in the sport has caused issues with reaching new fans while satisfying the die-hards. NASCAR needs to reach out to fans, drivers, sponsors, media outlets, team owners, and other stakeholders to continue the tradition of stockcars. Several challenges that influence NASCAR’s ability to draw in new crowds successfully are the rise in popularity of other branches of motorsport like Formula 1, Rally, and Formula D; increased accessibility to other entertainment options; the price to develop and race; perception of the fanbase and sport; and pressures from environmental groups. These challenges boil down to the ability of NASCAR to entertain and inform people to draw them to the sport. The goal for the continued success in NASCAR is to bring in new fans, sponsors, and possibly teams. The rise of the internet has allowed for a new type of media like blogs, vlogs, stories, and tweets; one market, however, has been increasing in popularity in the last five years: Video essays. The rise in video essays cannot be attributed to one factor. However, the ability to cover almost any topic of interest allows video essays to be used in various facets, a deep dive into someone’s life, the engineering that goes into bridge construction, and the rise of the sport.

However, NASCAR needs to focus its essays on its drivers. Another area NASCAR needs to invest in to reach new fans is to create a video game. Formula 1 and Rally have video games that have increased fan participation and interest. NASCAR can improve its attendance and viewership with video essays focusing on the history of the sport, its drivers, cars, and teams. By allowing the fans to know whom they are rooting for and the factors that led them there, interest in the sport will rise. Emp Lemon, a YouTuber, provides an excellent blueprint for NASCAR to follow. In his video “There Will Never Ever be another driver like Dale Earnhardt,” Emp Lemon explores the life and significance of Dale Earnhardt in NASCAR. Some of the factors that allowed for the success and mass viewership of the video are the result of Emp Lemon’s style and design. His style of informal, witty, yet informational content has allowed those not even fans of NASCAR to watch the video essay in its entirety while also introducing them to NASCAR from a different perspective. As mentioned earlier, the perception of NASCAR is part of its declining popularity; introducing new perspectives from Drivers, Teams, and fans into the sport can help change the stereotypical view of NASCAR. By showing that anyone can become part of the culture, NASCAR will increase its viewership in markets other than the South.

Since their inception, video games have brought millions of new fans to baseball, basketball, football, hockey, and even golf, through licensing deals. The success of motorsport videogames such as the Dirt Series, Need For Speed, Forza, and Assetto Corsa has proven there is a market for motorsport video games; with NASCAR’s hesitation to release a videogame similar to F1 23 by EA Sports, it has lost its market share in motorsports gaming. In addition to bringing new fans with gaming entertainment, those new to the sport can begin to understand the effort needed to race in the oval. While games like

Rocket League aim to produce an unrealistic experience, NASCAR should develop a game similar to F1 23 or Dirt Rally 2.0, as the realism of those games entices players to view their real-life counterparts. By helping fans and gamers understand the skill and experience necessary to perform like the drivers on the oval, the perception of the sport would change as well.
In conclusion, NASCAR faces significant challenges in attracting new fans and maintaining the interest of existing ones. The decline in viewership, attendance, and general interest in the sport highlights the need for NASCAR to reach out to various stakeholders and address the factors influencing its decline. The rise in popularity of other motorsport branches, increased accessibility to alternative entertainment options, perceptions of the fanbase and sport, and pressures from environmental groups are among the challenges NASCAR must overcome. To succeed in bringing in new fans, NASCAR can utilize video essays to educate and entertain viewers, focusing on the history of the sport, its drivers, cars, and teams. By providing a deeper understanding of NASCAR and its personalities, video essays can attract viewers who may not have been interested. The success of video essays in showcasing the significance of figures like Dale Earnhardt provides a blueprint for NASCAR to follow. Furthermore, developing a NASCAR video game similar to those in Formula 1 and rally racing can engage fans and gamers alike, providing a realistic experience and fostering an appreciation for the skill and effort required in oval racing. By implementing these strategies, NASCAR can enhance its viewership, attendance, and overall appeal, ensuring the continuation of its stock car racing tradition.
