Clinical Field Experience A: Language Focus
Part 1: Interview and Observation
1.
How do you address language form (vocabulary, grammar, and discourse specific to a particular content area) and language function (the purposes for communication/use of language in academic and social contexts) in your classroom?
Ms. Thomas stated that the student knows some English and can speak it. However, she provides ongoing support to the young lady as needed. 2.
How do you address the relationship between verbal and written expression in your classroom?
Ms. Thomas says that when she communicates with the student along with using her words, she also uses signals to help signify to the student what she is trying to tell her she
needs or wants.
3.
What strategies do you implement to support the various language needs of ELLs?
Some of the strategies Ms. Thomas uses with the student is motivating her with her lessons. This involves her using intrinsic motivation to help encourage the student. Ms. Thomas also implements visuals throughout the room. The visuals are a help to the ESL teacher as well as her other students too. Visuals have been a great help to her teaching an
ELL student for the first time.
4.
How do you provide ELLs with content area instruction that meets grade level expectations, while supporting their English language development? Ms. Thomas provides student-teacher instruction with the content areas. She also implements one on one instruction with the student. 5.
At least two additional questions to discuss with the teacher.
Do you have a resource that you find useful when teaching ELL students?
This is Ms. Thomas first year having an ELL student, she mentioned she is still learning and finding different resources. She has not found any resource that has been more useful
than the next yet.
Do you find it challenging teaching ELL students?
Ms. Thomas does find it to be a challenge teaching an ELL student but however she expressed she is up for the challenge. She is committed to helping her become efficient in
English. Part 2: Plan and Reflect
The teacher, Ms. Thomas was very engaged with the students. She did “clap once clap twice” when students needed to be redirected during lessons. The students completed individual work on IXL. Students also did group work each student answered questions individually on their laptop then discussed as a whole group. The students are practicing questions preparing for milestones. A student raised their hand to read the question that was shown. When reading the question, the student couldn’t pronounce the world “comparison” the teacher asked a friend to
help the student out. When the other student pronounced the word for the friend, the teacher then proceeded to ask another student to define the term. The teacher provided support to all students. That moment allowed me to understand the type of teacher that Ms. Thomas was. She was patient and rather a student had a disability or simply struggled she intervened and helped making it understandable. She made sure the student was able to pronounce and define the term after being stuck. I did notice a student that I am not sure if has an IEP or anything that struggled with math. When doing a group activity, the students all got a chance to answer a question. When
it was his turn, his friends cheered him on saying “go Y go”. When he got it right everyone clapped for the student. Not only does the teacher support and encourage the students but the students all support and encourage each other. Which I believe is a great thing especially with today’s society. While the one student that has an ELL was absent today, I was still able to discuss with the teacher about her and how she does in her academics. She is an ESL student. Her second language is English with Spanish being her first language. The teacher stated that she does okay with English. Her stronger suit they believe is math, she does better in her math lessons. When it comes to reading, she does okay, she sometimes answers questions in English. The teacher mentioned that is she knew more English that she could possibly score higher than the other learners. The teacher thinks that me working with her can be of help to her. Next week I plan to work beside her helping and providing support as needed with lessons. The teacher and I are excited to see what happens next week. Overall, it was a great opportunity
