The Essential Skills for Aspiring Nurses
Nurses are the backbone of the healthcare profession, and although many of their struggles and tedious work may go overlooked, they truly give a new meaning to the word care. However, the field of nursing is a challenging one and is not well-suited for all. A nurse needs to be adept in concise communication, for conveying information to patients and coworkers. They also need emotional resilience for the inevitable tragedy of death in the hospital. Finally, nursing requires strong critical thinking to be able to give a strong evaluation of a patient to the doctor. But how can we confirm the importance of these skills? Well, Dr. Luther Christman, a respected pioneer in the field who advocated for higher salaries for nurses, racial and gender equality in the
nursing field, and the first male dean of a School of Nursing outlines these skills and their importance in an interview I conducted.
I began by asking Mr. Christman how he would describe the role of communication and its importance in the specialization. In which he replied, saying that, “Communication is indeed a
cornerstone of nursing, and its importance has only grown with time. In the nursing profession, effective communication is pivotal for ensuring that patient information is conveyed accurately within the healthcare team.” This acknowledges the fact that communication is a skill that is necessary for every nurse to possess in order to find success in the field. I am confident that effective communication is vital for nurses because it guarantees patient confidentiality and a
cohesive environment for the team, allowing for smooth operation. Poor communication would lead to an unconnected staff which produces unprofessional habits like arguments amongst coworkers and incorrect disclosure of patient information. From Christman's valuable insights on
the role of communication in nursing, it becomes clear that effective communication skills are essential for nurses to succeed in their profession.
Following that question, I urged Luther to identify moments where stress was abundant and why it is vital for a nurse to have full command over their emotions. To which, he informed me that:
Nurses often find themselves in the midst of medical emergencies, where lives are on the
line. It could be a cardiac arrest, a traumatic injury, or any other sudden critical condition.
In these moments, remaining calm and focused is essential for providing life-saving care.
Panic or emotional distress can hinder effective decision-making. - Dr. Christman
Dr. Christman confesses to the power of emotional balance in such a rigorous workplace where the slightest hesitation can hamper your ability to act in an emergency. Which makes it clear that though the hospital environment can be immensely stressful, a nurse has no time to allow emotions of dismay or panic to pollute their mind. My experience of the hospital was the exact same, an intense environment with nurses that possessed many urgent tasks, this leads me to believe that all nurses must possess a high level of emotional balance for fluidity in the field. These two viewpoints emphasize the importance of emotional strength for a nurse.
The final question I gave to Luther Christman was, “What are some key contributions you have made to the Nursing profession?” He responded saying that, “ The most significant achievement during my career was the development of standardized nursing curricula. We recognized the need for a structured education for nurses, seeing as critical thinking is paramount
for a nurse's decision-making and problem solving during the job.” This demonstrates how crucial critical thinking is for nurses, which includes being able to make difficult decisions concerning a patient or their treatment with absolute conviction because you are knowledgeable enough to understand the situation. As a nursing major, I can attest to the extensive educational requirements for an aspiring nurse. There are many prerequisite classes in the major that support strong critical thinking, like psychology and English composition. Luther's work in the development of standardized nursing curricula highlights the emphasis on critical thinking within
the nursing profession.
Opposedly, others may argue that the education requirements and massive workload for nurses is immoderate and unrewarding considering the tedious schooling and practice. Also,
Nursing school is exceptionally competitive, in fact, only around 65% of those who apply to this strenuous program are actually accepted. However, while it is true that the process to achieve acceptance in the field of nursing is arduous, the process to become a nurse is reflective of the field itself. I believe that this is exactly how difficult the process for becoming a nurse should be,
and if you are not prepared for difficult work, stressful days and sleepless nights, the nursing path is not the path for you. Surely you would not want someone who is unqualified to be in charge of the wellbeing of you or your loved ones. Nursing is a profession that demands

In culmination, nursing is undoubtedly one of the most demanding and vital professions in healthcare. It is blatant that the challenges of the nursing career demand a wide variety of established skills and many years of education. With the help of Dr. Luther Christman, we were able to define the importance of communication, which fosters a cohesive working environment. Powerful emotional resilience that enables nurses to remain focused and calm during difficult situations. And critical thinking, which is paramount for making informed decisions in the practice of nursing. All of these skills and more unnamed capabilities add to the complexity of the nursing profession. They also showcase why it is an exclusive field that only few gifted individuals can gain credence for. Nurses embody the essence of care and even though often overlooked, it is clear that they are essential in a well-functioning hospital and society.
