Three Column Notes Readings from 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3 of your text EDUC 2302 Complete the graphic organizer using 10 quotations from your readings. I’ve given an example. Submit your assignment with a cover page in APA style. Your document should be a WORD document or pdf. Quotation What does this mean? How might I use this idea as a college student or teacher? Example: “Students who challenge themselves to engage in higher-level thinking such as Applying, Analyzing, Evaluating, and Creating are using what professors on our campus would commonly characterize as “critical thinking.” This means that I should challenge myself to understand Bloom’s taxonomy. I need to become a critical thinker. By working at the higher-level of cognitive domains, I will become a more critical thinker. As a teacher I will challenge myself to always include questions and activities that require critical thinking skills for my students. In my university courses I need to understand what type of thinking my professor is requiring. I can do this by reviewing higher-level thinking skills in Bloom’s taxonomy. 1. “Early childhood educators are required to act and what they must do and must not do.” This means that it is important for educators to know how to react to certain situations and know what to/not to do, as well as how to handle the situation. As a teacher, I will use this to remember that I must be prepared and know how to deal with certain situations when they arise. 2. “Above all, we shall not harm children. We shall not participate in practices that are emotionally damaging, physically harmful, disrespectful, degrading, dangerous, exploitative, or intimidating to children.” This means that, no matter what, no harm or hurtful actions (whether that be physical or nonphysical/mental) should ever be brought upon students. As a teacher, as well as a college student, I will use this to remember that even though sometimes teaching or working with children can be overwhelming that I should always control my temper and not take it out on the students/children. They are people to and should not be told rude or hurtful things or have any physical harm done to them. 3. “When you encounter an ethical issue, it may be helpful to remember that it is either a responsibility This means that an ethical issue cannot be both a dilemma or a responsibility. It must be one or the other because they cannot happen As a teacher, I remember this when dealing with certain issues that come up in a classroom with or without students. Knowing this will
or a dilemma, it cannot be both.” at once. This is important to know to know what type of situation you are dealing with. help me know how to handle the situation. 4. “The early childhood educator can conclude that it is morally right to allow a child who needs a nap to nap. But it is also right to keep the child from napping to help a busy mother keep the child on schedule.” The connects with knowing that an ethical issue is either a dilemma or a responsibility. Each are based on different situations and have different outcomes based on how to deal with the situations. For instance, when a child is tired, it is important to note what kind of situation it is to know what actions to take. As a teacher, I will use this to know how to deal with certain situations. It will help me to determine whether an ethical issue is a dilemma or a responsibility, which will also help me to know how to handle and act in different situations. 5. “Identify the conflicting responsibilities.” This means to know what one’s responsibility is to know how to deal with a situation or issue that arises. As a teacher I will use this to remember that different situations require different responsibilities. It is important to know what one’s responsibility is to know how to handle and resolve the situation. 6. “Don’t tell daddy, don’t tell daddy.” The student is afraid that the teacher will tell her dad that she does not want to drink her milk and does not want to get in trouble. As a teacher, I would use this and try incorporating different things, like a reward or a special cup that she likes, to encourage her to drink her milk. 7. “The code is here to back you up.” This means that there are all kinds of codes that one must follow to not break the rules. If one is following the rules/codes, they will not get in trouble because they have the code to back them up. As both a teacher and a college student, I will use this to remember to always follow the rules that the university and the district has. Following the rules will allow me to not get in trouble or face and consequences. 8. “You can rely on it to help you explain why you made a difficult or unpopular decision.” This means that you can always rely on a code or rule to back you up as long as you follow it and use it correctly. As both a college student and teacher, I will use this to remember that as long as I follow the rules and codes set in place that I cannot get in trouble. 9. “Look for guidance in the NAEYC Code.” This means that you can look to different codes for guidance on certain things. As a teacher, I will remember this to know where I can go if I need help or guidance on how to handle certain situations. 10. “Sometimes legal and ethical responsibilities are the same.” This means that these two can sometimes be related or be similar based on the As a teacher, I will use this to remember that even though these two are not the same,
situation at hand. they can be related or similar in certain ways.
