Christiansen 1 Alexia Christiansen Professor Navarro English 1A 19 November 2023 3 Digital Script Section 1 (1:00) Topic Proposal / Introduction to Film The issue that I'm exploring is the heat and water conditions that the public health and water boards are being affected by Climate change in Los Angeles. What is climate change? Climate change is shifts in the temperature and weather patterns that occur naturally or have been influenced by human activity. Climate change is a huge problem in our society as it harms and affects our environment. Humans are the main reason besides natural effects why we have severe weather storms and natural disasters. I'm exploring these issues because it's very important to the public health of heat and water conditions as it is a safety concern for many people. Extreme heat measures from climate change can cause many different safety issues as not only is it unhealthy but can also cause outages and discomfort. As well as conditions of water, water is a huge resource therefore the effects of having dirty, diseased, and unhealthy water is a safety concern for many. The city of Los Angeles is known for its huge population and the effects of the area's climate change. Climate change is a main problem in our economy as it can affect us drastically in many ways and harm our environment. I think that it is important to know the effects so that you can prevent climate change for your health and the safety of others as well. - Title Slide - 2-3 forms of Digital Evidence

Drought, severe storms, and extreme temperatures are just a few of the effects of climate change that we are already experiencing in Los Angeles County, our state, and the entire globe. One of the main risks to our communities' health and well-being in LA County is the occurrence of hotter, longer heat waves as a result of climate change. The electricity and AC technologies that LA has, affect the city as it causes extreme heat waves and rising temperatures. These rising temperatures can create an unhealthy environment for cities like LA. With the large population, these heat temperatures can be uncomfortable especially if it causes the electrical systems to shut down, meaning there would be no AC. This causes discomfort in Public health which can lead to heat stroke, heat rashes and burns, and dehydration. All of these factors are super important because it has a huge effect on our health. In an effort to address this, The Department of Public Health in Los Angeles County is collaborating with other County departments to promote cool pavements, green spaces, trees, and cool roofs as methods of reducing urban heat islands. The plan's main objectives are to cut greenhouse gas emissions and shield citizens from climate change's detrimental effects on their health. They have created a 5-point plan to reduce the health impacts
Christiansen 3 of climate change. The Public Health County of LA uses informing, promoting, providing, building, and adopting to help create a sustainable program for climate change. LA is known for its high carbon emissions which is important to decrease as it damages our health and pollutes the city. Marvin Braude, a Los Angeles councilman says this. VIDEO RESOURCE: https://youtu.be/dcvvJcy1lkU?feature=shared TIME (2:19-2:44) Third claim: What can you do to help prevent these Public Health issues? Doing your part is very important to overall help your health as well as your community. To do this, you can plant a tree. By planting trees, you can cool your house and neighborhood and reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. You can also invest in a cool roof, a cool roof that reflects heat will keep your house and neighborhood cool. As well as keep your energy bills lower which is a win-win. Supporting green space in your neighborhood such as parks and trees, helps cool down neighborhoods. These programs that reduce greenhouse gases such as recycling and composting, electric vehicles, and renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, are different ways to protect your communities from climate impacts. Therefore, it is important to prevent these causable effects as much as possible to decrease the struggle in these hot humid days. Section 4 (2:00 minutes) Stakeholder 2 (WATERBOARDS) First Claim https://www.pexels.com/video/garbage-floating-in-the-water-10177347/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/calm-body-of-water-1298690/ https://www.pexels.com/photo/city-road-traffic-water-8783852/ Analysis (3+ sentences explaining how the section supports the introduction and thesis) The Los Angeles Water Board creates rules, guidelines, and approvals to safeguard the quality of surface and groundwater. It also manages the removal of contaminated land and groundwater and upholds the regulations that it has established. Furthermore, the Los Angeles Water Board collaborates with the State Water Resources Control Board (State Water Board) to create and execute state-wide guidelines, policies, and licenses. Additionally, the Board offers grants and loans to support initiatives that safeguard drinking water supplies, improve water quality, and safeguard water resources in general. The impact of climate change in Los Angeles could take many different forms, including decreased stream flow, altered aquatic habitats, elevated surface water temperatures, elevated pollutant levels, and altered salinity and acidification in coastal regions. Numerous beneficial uses of our waters, such as those that preserve ecological habitats or are involved in commerce, may be impacted by these effects. Section 5 (1:00 minute to 2:00 minutes) Second Claim

Pollutants are gathered and transported to surface waters by stormwater runoff. There are visible pollutants like trash, motor oil, and debris; there are also invisible pollutants like dissolved metals and organic chemicals. Stormwater pollutants can also have an impact on how water bodies are used recreationally by making them unsafe for swimming, boating, fishing, and wading. Stormwater typically enters water bodies directly through separate storm sewer systems, which is one of the main ways that rivers, lakes, and the ocean get contaminated. So what can you do? To prevent wildlife and yourself from getting sick from the contaminated water, you need to help stop garbage and debris from getting into the sewer drains. Throwing away your trash and trash onto the street can be a tremendous help to our environment. Taking care of the huge city will decrease the amount of disease and sickness that goes around, protecting you and your loved ones. Conclusion: Climate change is something to keep in mind in your daily life, as it creates harm to our earth and society. The temperature change can bring poverty to communities and wildlife. Severe heat waves, droughts, and storms bring hardships as they cause loss and damage to families. Climate change is happening worldwide and some countries are affected extremely with little to no support. Many cities such as Los Angeles have experienced climate change firsthand and yours could be next. As Los Angeles contributes to climate change by greenhouse gases, electricity infrastructure systems, and transportation it’s important to change a small portion of your lifestyle to help prevent climate change from worsening down the road. Using less energy when not needed, recycling, and using public transit can help make a difference in preventing climate change. By doing your part can create a better environment for our society
