ENGR 115 L AB : F ORCE AND F ORCE -R ELATED V ARIABLES A SSIGNMENT I NSTRUCTIONS I NSTRUCTIONS Lab assignments are intended to give you some ‘hands on’ experience in applying the concepts introduced in the course text. They are designed to get you out of your classroom or office and develop the skills of designing experiments and collecting data, and then performing calculations, evaluating the results, and communicating your findings. Labs are more than just number crunching – they are about reflecting on what is both practical and technically sound engineering problem-solving. For each problem below, address the scenario presented and develop engineering solutions. Communicate your results using drawings, pictures, and discussion, supported by calculations developed using the Microsoft Equation Editor or similar tool. Submit your lab report in a single pdf file uploaded to the location provided in Canvas before the due date/time indicated. Each problem should be treated as a micro-report with a problem statement, calculations/work shown to support your solution, and a conclusion/reflection on your findings. P ROBLEMS 1. In the past, scientists and engineers have used pendulums to measure the value of g at a location. The basic forces involved are the wire's tension and the suspended mass's weight. Design a pendulum that can be used to measure the value of gravity, g, at your location. The formula to use to measure the acceleration due to gravity is: T = 2 π L g where T is the period of oscillation of the pendulum, which is the time it takes to complete one cycle. The distance between the pivot point and the center of the mass of the suspended deadweight is represented by L . Think carefully about ways to increase the accuracy of your system. Discuss your findings in a brief report. Create a table with length, time, and value of gravity findings. Include a picture of your pendulum. 2. Do you think there is a relationship between a person’s weight, height, and foot size? If so, verify your answer. Designers often learn from their natural surroundings; do bigger animals have bigger feet? Write a brief report on your findings, include your references. Page 1 of 2
ENGR 115 3. Investigate the operation of pressure-measuring devices such as manometers, Bourdon tubes, pitot tubes, and diaphragm pressure sensors. Write a brief report discussing your findings and cite your sources. 4. Identify design, fabrication, or experiment issues that impeded your performance last week and improve your MTC. Rerun your MTC and collect data. Wind up the MTC and use a stopwatch to take a minimum of five timed trials of your car over a 3-meter distance and the longest running distance and time. Be sure to run your MTC on a low-friction, level surface. Develop a revised table like the one below with your modified MTC times, distances, and masses. Include last weeks table also as reference with original run time and distance. Reflect on your MTC’s performance and changes made with your design improvements. Did your MTC travel straight or have an arc? Was their wobble in your wheels? Was your car reasonably consistent with the time and distance? Note any issues or abnormalities you experienced.
