ASSESSMENT MODIFICATION ASSIGNMENT 7 As a teacher, I must give my English Language Learners academic and emotional support while in my classroom. This support includes modifying assessments with them in mind. The objective of this assessment requires that students be able to match community helpers to the objects associated with their occupation. The Kindergarten assessment aligns with the following Florida State Standard:  SS.K.E.1.1  -  Describe different kinds of jobs that people do, and the tools or equipment used.             This Social Studies assessment was modified specifically for my ELL in my Block II practicum. Ana is a Kindergartner who speaks Spanish or a similar dialect fluently; however, she cannot read or write in her L1. Additionally, she has not been given the WIDA assessment yet; however, from what her teacher tells me and from what I observed, she would most likely be at Level one or Entering. In addition to modifying the assessment for Level one ELLs, I also made modifications for ELLs who are at Levels two and three. However, I did not make any modifications for Level four ELLs as they should be able to complete the original version of the assessment.             I made several modifications for my Level one ELLs. To begin, the original assessment had twelve questions that the student needed to answer; however, I paired that amount down to four. Additionally, I included the directions in my ELL’s native language; however, since she cannot read in her L1, I modeled one of the answers for her. Furthermore, instead of writing the answers, ELLs will demonstrate their understanding by drawing a line to match a community helper to their correct tool. I also labeled the pictures of each community helper so the students can begin to connect the name of the helper with their image.             For the Level two ELLs, I also changed to amount of questions from twelve to five; however, if I were giving this assessment in my classroom, I would most likely make this a two –
ASSESSMENT MODIFICATION ASSIGNMENT 8 page assessment and give them about seven questions. The Level two ELLs will use a word bank to help them decide which is the correct community helper that answers the question, “Who am I?” Furthermore, I used the same question at the end of every clue to provide repetition and practice. I also simplified the language so as not to overwhelm the students with words. Additionally, the ELLs can also use the pictures that are by each question to help them decide which community helper best answers the clue.             The assessment for the Level three ELLs does not include any pictures; however, they too can use a word bank to help them find the answers to the clues. Additionally, some of the questions used the word  community  a couple of times; therefore, if a student did not understand what that word meant, I included the definition of that word on the assessment. I also used a green highlighter to help the students understand the connection between the vocabulary word, and each time it occurred in the questions.  I modified the grading rubrics for this assessment and have included the rubric that has been modified for Level one ELLs. While working with a para, the ELL will be graded on the following points: The student can point to the correct community helper when verbalized by the para, the student can match the community helper with their tools with support from the para, the student can state the name of the community helper with prompting from the para, and finally, the student participates in cooperative learning. The learning goal for the ELLs is that they have an understanding of what a community helper is and what they do in our communities. Depending on the ELL’s proficiency level, they will demonstrate that in various ways. Additionally, Level one and two ELLs are expected to complete their assessment with 80% accuracy, whereas Level three and four ELLs should have 85% accuracy. Furthermore, I can use this data to plan future instruction.
ASSESSMENT MODIFICATION ASSIGNMENT 9            It is important that stakeholders, such as parents and guardians, understand what I am doing to help their child reach the appropriate academic goals and benchmarks. Therefore, I will include a sample letter to Ana’s parents outlining her performance on the modified assessment. However, I know that her father can only read and write in Spanish, and her mother is illiterate in both her L1 and L2. For those reasons, I will use Google to translate the sample letter into Spanish. Additionally, if I were in the classroom, I would use Google Voice to make a recording of a translator or me reading the letter out loud and then, I would send it to Ana’s mom so she could hear about Ana’s progress.  Dear Ana’s Parents,
