INFORMATIVE BRIEFING – ELECTRIC CARS AND THE ENVIRONMENT
Title:
Electric Cars and the Environment
General purpose:
To inform.
Specific purpose:
By the end of my speech, the audience will be more educated on why electric cars are beneficial for the environment.
Thesis statement: Electric cars are beneficial for the environment. Introduction
Attention getter:
I.
When I was a kid, I helped work on old cars with my dad and Grandpa. When we were finished, they would start the car and I loved the smell of the exhaust. I did not know the effects of the exhaust fumes until I was older, and I found out they very thing I liked to help fix was ruining our planet. II.
Introduction of topic:
Today I’m going to inform you about greenhouse gasses and how electric cars (EV) are beneficial for the environment.
Body
I.
Gasoline is the number one pollutant on our planet, as we use more gas, the more greenhouse gases we put in the air causing the planet to warm up. Our planet is the only home we have right now, and we need to take care of it for future generations.
II.
According to Environmental protection agency, carbon dioxide (CO
2
) is the primary greenhouse gas released. According to energy information administration burning a gallon of gasoline (that does not contain ethanol) produces about 19 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO
2
).
III.
There are many reasons why we should care about this, one is that greenhouse gases are making our planet warmer. According to NASA carbon dioxide (CO
2
) is a heat trapping gas. Since the beginning of the industrial times (18th century) humans have raised the amount of

CO
2
in the atmosphere by 50 percent. In 2022 it is at 150 percent of its value since the 18th century.
A.
Earthjustice.org tells us that emissions from vehicles are not only bad for the environment but bad for our health. It also tells us greenhouse gases can cause asthma, bronchitis, cancer, and premature death.
IV.
How can Electric cars benefit the environment? Well, they reduce the amount of greenhouse gases released in the air. A.
According to businessinsider.com Los Angeles is known for its smog and pollution and
during the COVID-19 lockdown the air was cleaner and much more clearer. CBS states
that experts attributed the reduced greenhouse gases to fewer planes flying and less traffic on the ground during that time.
B.
Most of the greenhouse gases release in the air for electric cars is during the manufacturing stages and power companies. According to the international energy agency a mid-sized electric car has a total carbon load of 19.7 tons of CO
2
released in its lifetime and a gas-powered car has a total carbon load of 41.9 tons
of CO
2 released.
V.
The second reason that electrics cars are beneficial for the environment is that EVs require no oil changes.
A.
Oil is discarded in inappropriate ways such as dumping it on the ground, in the drain, etc.… According to material science journal dumping oil on the ground causes poisonous effects to plants causing the plants to die. We need those plants to filter out harmful gases and release oxygen into the air we breathe. It also states that oil in
water floats preventing oxygen from penetrating, eventually effecting aquatic life.

B.
According to the Environmental Protection Agency used oil is insoluble, persistent and can contain toxic chemicals and heavy metals. Oil is slow to degrade and sticks to
everything, as you can see in previous oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico. It also states that it is a major source of contamination of waterways and can get into our drinking water.
Conclusion
I.
Many people think that electric cars are worst for the environment than gas powered cars. People need to the informed about the effects of greenhouse gases and our society needs to make a change on how much greenhouse gases are released into the air. So, let me ask you a question, with what you know now do you think electric cars are beneficial to the environment?
