Research on child maltreatment and neglect within the foster care system can supply both
knowledge and insight that can help to benefit victims of child abuse and neglect. Conducting
more research on child maltreatment can reduce long-term costs associated with the
consequences of it and bring awareness. It is unfortunate that in society today, some children
grow up without the opportunity of having a loving family to raise them. More unimaginable is
children growing up with parents or family members that are abusive. Children raised in abusive
environments reported to social services and removed from their homes are placed in foster care.
Foster care is defined as supervised care for delinquent or neglected children usually in an
institution or substitute home. The foster system is designed to protect children, but often has
many issues and does not shed light on the main cause of neglect within the system of foster
care.
Every child is entitled to proper care regardless of gender, race, or other differences.
However, child abuse has remained a main subject of discussion because the number of
neglected and abused children is increasing. Unfortunately, there is a lot of child abuse and
neglect that goes left unreported. In an article, “How we can, and should, do more for maltreated
children.” Social policy report, 33(3), 1-40. It presents information on children who are
temporarily or permanently separated from their family of origin each year. This passage
Identifies the opportunities for federal and state policy to better support the safety, health, and
well-being of children in foster care. This article also gives a current overview of foster care in
the United States. Talks about the early detection of abuse and ways to report it.
It is important for people to understand, recognize, and report the sight of neglectful
abuse in general. I feel as if many of the neglect cases within local children's facilities start with
employers and workers who do not have the proper training to do so. Being a childcare provider
requires much skill and patience. Having the proper training and noticing red flags within
workers who care for them is very important. In an article,
“The role of early foster care
commitment on young children's symptoms of attachment disorders and mental health problems
over time” (2022) Child Abuse & Neglect, 127 gives information about programs for the
prevention of child maltreatment. Talks about the lack of commitment within the foster care
system, which to me is the biggest problem. Because many workers are not working to provide
the best care for children. There are many employers who do not value their jobs, which can be a
concern for the care being given in childcare environments coming from workers with negative
intentions or an undesire to care for children.
How to properly care for children with challenging
disorders and behaviors. This is the topic of the discussion in this article. Talks about the
placements in foster care and the statistical percentage of children being placed.
