Homeland Insecurity
During this assignment, the first obstacle I ran into in was finding a topic.
After class one
day, a fellow classmate and I made an appointment with a library research specialist, and from
there she helped me not only find my topic, but also several sources.
Because I was not sure of
where I wanted to start, she recommended I begin by searching the local news databases via the
CPCC library.
The main page of the news databases immediately presented me with four links
labeled “Best Bets!”
I chose to use the three sources sponsored by NC Live:
Infotrac
Newsstand, International Newsstream,
and
US Newsstream
. Just by using those three sources, I
was able to cover local, national, and global news. As advised by the research specialist I began
my search from a local source first to see what had been an issue.
There I found an article
complaining about airport security and its treatment of a passenger.
Having experienced some of
the harsher sides to air travel that I hear people talking about, I decided this would be a good
topic and opportunity to learn more about the subject.
I searched the Internet to find some of the issues that I was unaware of.
During my
search, I found multiple reputable news sources, such as
NPR
and
New York Times
that had very
interesting articles involving security checks and procedures.
As a general rule, I chose to only
look at information that was at most five years old; however, the oldest source I used was from
2014.
My key words for searching included “security, TSA, airport, regulations, and customs.”
Similarly, I also searched
Proquest
and the CPCC news databases following the same guidelines.

Searching
Proquest
was much broader and many times articles would repeat so it involved
frequently changing out the key search words and going through several pages of results until I
found something useful.
Checking through all of these sources took several hours, not because it
was necessarily hard but because I needed to be certain the sources would work well with my
paper and had potential useful information.
While I was already familiar with the topic, having travelled internationally so much, I
did learn of many future plans for improvement of security, several shocking articles of possible
security violations, and much about how other countries handle air travel.
Another thing that
came out of this assignment was that although I already knew of the various resources at the
library, I talked to a research advisor in the library for the first time.
It can be very hard for me to
choose topics to write about so this has most certainty helped me begin the process sooner than if
I had done so alone.
I was introduced to a good starting point and was shown a new way of
looking at possible topics.
Although I may not have been taught anything new about the online
process, I feel more comfortable using the resources available around campus.
Given the chance to do this again, I would go to the library immediately for an even
better start to my subject. I would definitely like to see an even greater variety in my sources,
possibly a podcast or something similar.
I do think the sources I have currently are interesting
and appropriate for my topic.
Coupled with a growing interest in my subject, I have actually
become excited to write a paper.
