The Thousand and One Nights 1094-1102 [to "The First Old Man's Tale"] In a sentence or two, summarize The Tale of the Ox and the Donkey. What is the vizier trying to teach Shahrazad with this tale? He is worried that Shahrazad will miscalculate her plan and be punished for something she thought would be a good idea. In a sentence or two, summarize The Tale of the Merchant and his Wife. What is the vizier trying to teach Shahrazad with this tale? He is saying that if she doesn’t change her mind, he will beat her up. But he’s trying to teach her that sometimes we put our mind on things that we think are good ideas but actually are harmful to oneself. What plan does Shahrazad form with her sister, Dinarzad? Shahrazad’s plan is for her sister to ask her to tell a story which will keep the king from killing her the next morning. In “The Story of the Merchant and the Demon,” whom does the merchant accidentally kill? How does he kill him? The merchant accidentally killed the demon’s son by hitting him with one of the pits from his dates. What is the penalty for this accidental homicide, and who will enforce the penalty? The penalty is that the merchant must die. The demon enforces this penalty. What is about to happen when morning breaks and Shahrazad stops telling the story? What is the resulting reaction from Shahrayar? In what way is Shahrazad like the merchant? The demon is about to kill the merchant. Shahrayar keeps Shahrazad alive for one more day. She is like the merchant in that she is trying to bide her time to live. How long is the merchant given to live, and how does he spend that time? The merchant is given one year to live. He spends this time making a will and dividing everything for after he dies. He then spends the rest of his time with his family.
When the merchant returns to the orchard on New Year’s Day, he meets an old man leading what kind of animal on a leash? He meets an old man leading a deer on a leash. The next night, when Shahrazad begins to tell the story, the merchant is joined by another man. What animals does this man have with him? This man has two black hounds. What story does the man with the deer tell the man with the black hounds? Do you see how the frame tale is going deeper, with Shahrazad telling a story about the merchant and a demon and two men with animals, and then the man with the deer telling the man with the hounds about the merchant and the demon? The growing group is joined by another old man, whom the two men with animals also tell the story of the merchant and the demon. As the third night ends, how does Shahrazad describe the story she will tell on the fourth night if the king lets her live?
